Reflux Complications

My 10 week old baby is in the process of overcoming severe reflux. She is strictly fed breastmilk but since her reflux, she prefers feeding from a bottle rather than straight from me ( I'm assuming she has more control with the bottle nipple). I'm thankful that she is able to finally eat without being in any pain, but this is breaking my heart! Furthermore, I'm terrified that my milk supply will go down if I strictly pump because I can't get her to breastfeed. Could anyone tell me how to fix this problem & get my baby back to being comfortable breastfeeding again? Also, any additional pointers on dealing with GERD would be greatly appreciated as well! PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

Re: Reflux Complications

  • I'm sorry you are going through this. Perhaps the breastfeeding board would be more helpful?

  • Is she on medication? My LO takes zantac, which has made a HUGE difference. Prior she wouldn't stay latched and would squirm and cry. Now she eats peacefully (unless she has gas..whole different issue lol). I would just keep offering her the breast before giving her a bottle, but don't force her. Also try doing skin to skin and laying her on your chest. I find my LO will scoot down to position to breastfeed...it's really cute. If you're still having issues though go see a lactation consultant.
  • My 12 week old just started Zantac so hoping it helps, she also would squirm/fussy/cry/refuse the breast but would take from bottle. Will your baby breastfeed when really sleepy? Mine will, so the middle of the night, first thing in the morning go well. I will even wake her from nap and she is super groggy and does great.
  • Middle of the day was the worst for her reflux, or in the morning. Once i woke up to her almost choking on it. She kept swallowing and had spit bubbles coming out her mouth. It was so scary! That's when I knew it was bad enough to warrant giving her the medicine.
