Is he hungry? Does he need to be changed?

FTM here... How do you guys deal with family asking questions whenever your baby is crying?

My baby is the first grandbaby on both sides, and whenever our five week old is crying, it seems everyone (my parents, his parents, his grandmother) has to ask what's going on. "Is he hungry? Does he need to be changed? Does he need to be burped?".... It's getting so annoying. Obviously whenever your baby is crying, you do your best to figure out why. I don't need everyone and their brother asking me why the baby is crying - especially when it's obvious that I'm trying to find out why.

Has anyone else dealt with this and what is a polite way to get them to stop asking?!

OMG. This! Yes ! So annoying!!
  • I usually just say "I'm trying to figure that out. I'll let you know when i know".
  • I know how you feel. I hate when someone tries to tell me what to do like I haven't tried it. I spend every day all day with him so if anyone could guess what's wrong it would be me. Our LO has crying episodes everyday where he's changed and fed so I know it's not that. He either wants to be held/entertained or is tired because he stays awake so much and fights sleep. I say trust your instincts and let them try to calm your LO if they question you.
  • Lol yes!! Every time! "Is she hungry? She's sucking on her hands! Wait now she's rooting, she must be hungry! Here!" And now picture a baby being shoved at you.
    1. My baby sucks on her hands all the time if they are near her face.

    2. If you have her against bare skin, she WILL root around. It's instinct. So if her mouth is against your forearm, yes she will root. I fed her before you got here
  • I get this all the time too. Especially because LO always tries getting his hands in his mouth so everyone 'knows' he is hungry. I just say calmly 'sometimes babies just cry even though their tummies are full and their pants are dry'

  • I've dealt with this, I told the worst offenders that all this questioning was stressing me out and that did the trick in getting it to stop.

  • MIL takes this a step further and insists LO has some medical problems that I must be ignoring. DD cried when she woke up from a nap because she was hungry (as to be expected). MIL insisted LO must have tummy issues and we should immediately switch her to goat's milk.
  • I had this from my mom when she was visiting. Drove me up the friggen wall. Two weeks of it. Every time he cried. Babies cry! Sometimes for no reason! You think she would have remembered
  • End of July mom here, I snuck into August to check out the discussions!
I get this all the time and it is so so annoying and frustrating.
One side I get all the suggestions and when I say what the problem is... I get "oh no it probably this."
Example I say "she is hungry" response "oh no it's gas"

    Drives me up the wall!
By the way I'm totally using that ask him line! I really have no suggestions besides try to ignore them. I know it's hard because then you start to second guess yourself. Well, that happens to me at least.
  • I hate it so much when everyone is like he is hungry. Oh yea he is acting like he is hungry....really he just ate 2 seconds ago. If he cries it doesn't always mean he is hungry.
  • Like everyone else I get this too. The false hunger cues used to fool me too. Is be like, but I just fed you how can you be hungry. What I've learned is that if my LO is overly tired, overstimulated or just discontent she will act like she is hungry. The family however will just bring her to me at the first fuss and say they think she's hungry.
  • I just offended my two sil and DH they just said this after leaving me alone all day and arriving back high on spirit from a nice day in the sun. They can all fuck off!!
  • My MIL did this the other day bc DD started fussing when she picked her up. She asked me several times if she was hungry and I said several times that she'd just had a bottle. She then said something to my DH in Spanish (no idea what). A couple minutes later DH says she's hungry bc they put their finger in her mouth and she sucked. So I said fine and handed over the back up bottle from the diaper bag. Baby girl ended up spitting up on MIL, something she never does. MIL said that means she had milk sitting in her tummy for a long time and something else about colic. Um, no. My child is not colicky and she spit up bc you don't listen to me.

My LO does this too. I'm thinking LO knows feeding calms her and makes her feel good, so she thinks that's what she needs.
