Anxiety filled soon-to-be 1st time Mama

I have been calm my entire pregnancy, and now I'm starting to think, "How am I going to be okay after giving birth to MY son whom I am responsible for?"... "Will I fail, will he love me, will I feel that connection when he is finally here.. Will we bond?" There are so many kore anxiety ridden questions that run through my mind but these are at the top of the list. I'm sure the advice is most likely, "I'll just have to wait and see", but I would like to shut my mind off in the meantime.

  • Unfortunately it doesn't work that way ;) (shutting your mind off) I can tell you that the bond will happen and that of course he will love you -- babies come in and quickly develop that connection because you are their world. He'll know your voice, he'll know your smell, and hey -- you're his lifeline - literally! As for your own feelings, those too will come. If not instantly, soon after. With my first, I was also super nervous. I didn't really get that "connection" until about 10 min after we got home from the hospital. But when it came, it was amazing.

I know saying "don't stress" doesn't change your worry, but know that all of those feelings will come. As for the responsibility, it is huge -- but coming from an over preparer and worrier, believe me -- you may find those early weeks easier than expected ;)

  • I can relate to some of those fears. I asked my husband yesterday "what are we going to do with a baby?" He is so level headed he put my mind at ease by saying "All you have to do is love her and feed her. I will take care of the rest". I know it will be so much more than that but it's nice to be reassured that I have support!!
  • First of all I'd say realize the things you are thinking are totally normal. This is my second and I'm still an anxious mess right now. I think there are some hormonal surges at the end that bring this on.... These last few weeks are the most difficult in my opinion, physically and mentally. Before you know it, it will be behind you, and a whole new set of worries take over! :) Just know you aren't by any means alone in those thoughts!
