Confused by my appointment

edited September 2015 in October 2015 Moms
2 weeks ago at my 34 week appointment I measured at exactly 34 weeks. I had an ultrasound that day that confirmed her size was right on schedule. In fact I've always measured the correct week every appointment.

Today at 36 weeks I was measured at 33 weeks. They (ob and student) even measured 2 or 3 times out of disbelief. They asked me if I felt her getting lower and I said yes. Then they said great, see you next week. And that was that.... They didn't act worried at all, so should I be? Does this mean she could possibly come early or could it have been her position? I'm wondering if at my 37 week appointment I'll measure at 37weeks?!

Any experience?

Oh and they said unless I wanted a cervical exam I didn't have to get one. I said no thanks, haven't lost the plug so there probably isn't any change... Then they said "you might not lose one."... Ahh I did with my first, I thought everybody does with every pregnancy?!

** I should note that this past weekend was very active and busy for us. I over did it with so much walking. I'm pretty sure that's when I noticed her getting lower.

  • This is why they go from your 8 week US to determine your due date. Baby sizes can vary so much when we get to this point that scans are inaccurate.

  • I didn't lose my plug before labor with my first.  I'm sure at some point it came out during labor.

As far measurements, I also measured small at my recent appointment because baby is sitting much lower now.  :)

I didn't have an 8 week US. They only do them at 20 weeks. The only reason I had one at 34 weeks is because I was being tested for something which it turned out I didn't have! My date is very accurate though. I keep track of everything. This is the first time my measurement has ever been off.
  • This happened with my first pregnancy. She had dropped incredibly in one week. It was a shock so I had an ultrasound to confirm that was all that had happened. I had her within a week of that appointment (10 days early). I say don't worry but call tomorrow if you can't shake the stress!
  • Can't speak from experience, but I've read from others on the board that toward the end fundal height can be misleading specifically for the reason that baby drops lower. If your doctor isn't worried, no reason for you to be, really. Fundal height isn't a great measure of anything to begin with, just kind of a guesstimate.

As far as the mucus plug, also no experience but I've read some women don't lose it until they're already in the hospital ready to deliver.
  • Don't worry! It sounds like baby dropped. And typically fundal height will measure lower after that. And babies position can affect measurements. If baby looked good on your ultrasound I personally wouldn't worry. And I haven't seen a mucous plug this time and I've been 3cm since 34 weeks. .. is not something I look for either. ..
  • I would say if Doctor isn't worried you shouldn't be either. Baby dropping is most likely the cause of the number difference. As for the mucus plug I never saw mine. This is my third pregnancy and with my first my doctor said if you're dilated you no longer have a plug. I dilated by 36 weeks to at least 2 with both of my others and never saw it. I'm almost 36 now and I've not seen it yet this time and I have my appointment tomorrow and will most likely have a cervical exam.
  • My OB said your fundal height can measure up to 3 weeks off either way (ahead or behind) and they don't worry, because baby could be ll stretched out or curled up and this affects the measurement.

I've measured ahead and behind when they measure fundal height, but all my ultrasounds (which I have weekly due to GD) are right on target with my original due date.

  • @1stComesLove421 ohh gotcha, sorry! We get them at 8 and 20 weeks.

I'm sure everything is fine. :) if your doctor doesn't seem worried, I would try not to stress over it. Maybe with her lowering it was hard for them to get their measurements.
  • Thank you all for your input! I guess since the doctor has no concerns it will just be a waiting game until baby Ava arrives!
  • My plug came out during a dilation check during labor.
  • Babies can drop a few weeks ahead of time.

  • Sounds like your baby is just dropping to me, hence them asking if it feels lower. Baby is just slowly plotting it's escape is all. Keep yourself busy, doc would tell you if there was something to worry about
