Engorgement during weaning

I decided to start formula feeding my 2 week old daughter because breastfeeding was stressing me out and I felt like I could be a better mother to her if I wasn't breastfeeding. Which after giving her the first bottle and not having to pump or give her the boob I felt an immediate sense of relief and my anxiety was gone! I am enjoying being a mom so much more.

Just one problem is the engorgement during the weaning...what are the best remedies for this? How long will the really uncomfortable feeling last?

I have been pumping just a little for comfort when I can't take anymore. Is this going to cause more milk production?

Any advice or tips would be so welcome and please no judgement!

Re: Engorgement during weaning

  • If anyone judges you, tell them to shove it. Breastfeeding isn't easy, and it formula feeding makes you feel less anxiety, then do it. You need your sanity momma! As long as your LO is getting fed.
Like they say "FED is best."

For the engorgement, frozen cabbage leaves in your bra, or just regular cabbage leaves. And ice packs. Don't use heat, and don't pump. Those two things are signals to make more milk.
  • Loading the player...
  • Ice. Also wear a tight sports bra and be careful not to stimulate the nipples, even with water in the shower.
  • After 4 weeks I stopped breastfeeding cold turkey last Wednesday afternoon. The engorgement lasted days, only the first 48 were torture. I used cold cabbage leaves on my breast, ate 1/4 tsp sage 3x's a day for 3 days, took sudafed and popped Motrin and Tylenol around the clock. Today, my breasts still have milk (I can feel the weight of it!) but not painful or uncomfortable. They still get tingly and leak a little when little man gets hungry or fussy.

Btw Im sooooo glad I chose to switch to formula. Im such a happier momma! You dont have to explain your choice to anyone! Its your baby, your life, and your choice.
  • Oh and just a heads up, the cabbage will have you smelling like a rotten garden or as my DH said wood LOL Try to have someone who can help with LO for the first 24 hrs cause the pain of LO touching the breasts when being held was unbearable for me.

    Happy drying up momma

  • Thank you all for the advice! I will stop the pumping and just suck it up!
  • If you're REALLY uncomfortable, I would pump just comfort (like until it doesn't hurt anymore), but not until completely empty. That will also help slow things down.
