GBS Test

I had a strep B test when I found myself in the hospital in preterm labor at 34 weeks. The test came back negative. Now I'm 36 weeks 2 days and I have a doctors appointment today and they want to check me again? I do not see why this is necessary and I am wondering if I could refuse it?

  • Get checked again! Apparently it can come and go and testing too early can miss it if you develop it later and its so so dangerous for baby! Since it's a really easy peasy no big deal swab I'd definetly just do it again versus risking any danger to baby.
  • Like others have said, do it again. The safest is have it at or after 36 weeks, any time before that could be too early. I read a story about a woman who had the test (negative) at 34 weeks, delivered at 39 and gave her baby GBS. She was tested too soon. They tested you at 34 in case you did happen to have the baby, so you start on antibiotics. But since you didn't actually deliver, you really need to be tested again.
  • I had about the same experience with my 1st. Get checked one last time, they will not count that first test as accurate if you were to go into labor. It's uncomfortable and annoying, but it's worth it to double check. :)
  • Do not risk it, it isn't that hard to be tested again. GBS is no joke if it is passed on accident!

  • Yep get checked again! Such a simple precaution for something that doesn't bother us, but could effect baby if you have it and don't get antibiotics to the baby during labor. GBS is a natural bacteria that may come and go
  • Just do it. 36 weeks is when they do the test and I'm assuming there's a reason why they wait and do it at 36 weeks instead of 34. The hospital probably did it at 34 weeks because of the pre-term labor in case you ended up delivering then and they needed to know whether to get you antibiotics. Plus, heck, why not, it's a simple, non-invasive test and will only give you even more peace of mind. I actually kind of wish I would be tested twice for it since I get so paranoid!
  • I agree, just have them do the swab again... it's so easy and definitely better to be safe than sorry!
  • I have a friend who's daughter was born perfectly healthy, but contracted GSB during labor. She about 5 now, but has already lived longer than they expected. She can't talk, walk, she has a feeding tube, and my heart just breaks for my friend and her little girl.
This isn't just for the OP, but everyone. Make sure you get tested and for Pete's sake, if you test positive make sure the nurses are giving you the antibiotics you need during labor! <-- that's what's happened to my friend. There were 2 nurses and each thought the other put the antibiotic in her drip.
  • Thank you everyone for your input! I appreciate it! They checked my cervix and I went ahead and had them do the GBS test too. Hoping everything comes back in tip top shape :)
  • Mine came back negative but I'm still wanting them to put me on antibiotics during labor because Ive had a problem with yeast infections and im just so scared of having something no one caught and passing it to my son.
