Trying to Get Pregnant

Insulin Resistant

Hi.  So I just found out that I'm insulin resistant and now I have to go on Metformin.  Is anyone else taking Metformin? Has it improved your insulin levels? Did you experience any of the side effects?  I was supposed to start my first IUI this month and now I won't be starting until November which is kind of disappointing but the doc said I will probably lose weight which is a bonus right?

Re: Insulin Resistant

  • Hello, I have no experience to share but I think there have been discussions about this. I would try using the search function and see what pops up :) best of luck!

  • Yes and yes. You should also go on a low glycemic duet to help your insulin levels.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I am currently taking it. The side effects were the worst at the very beginning and it was mostly GI issues (bloat, abdominal cramping, diarrhea) but it only last for the first few hours after I took it. My doctor had me take 1 pill once/day for 4 days, then 2 pills/day for 4 days, and then 3 pills/day as my maintenance dose.

Everyone is different though. My experience might be a lot different than yours. Good luck!
  • Do you have PCOS too, or just insulin resistance? Even if you don't have PCOS, a lot of ladies on here do, and you could probably find info about metformin on the PCOS threads.

    Good luck!

  • Side effects weren't pleasent at first but subsided after a few weeks. I started on metaformin three months ago and have a follow up appoinent with ultrasound in two weeks to see if it's working.
  • Thanks for your responses. I will look at low glycemic diet. I don't have PCOS but I will definitely go and check that out. I started it and it sucked. I felt so sick but hopefully it will be better.
  • It gets better! Are you on the extended release? I've heard the side effects are less severe with ER. Also it helps to take the meds with a meal.

  • First of all, best of luck with the Metformin.  I'm insulin resistant but have not been diagnosed as PCOS.  I started out on 1000 mg a day and now I'm at 2000 mg a day (2 pills a day).  My cycles have been regulated since starting Metformin which has been great because I was extremely irregular before.

Word of warning like PP, Metformin is well known for its GI issues.  I kept a diary of everything I ate and when I had adverse reactions.  Pastas and anything rich in carbs did a number of me.  My doctor didn't tell me to keep a diary but I started it after the GI issues emerged. I now know which foods to avoid and I feel as though it's allowed me to circumvent some of the issues that I had in the beginning.

Low GI is also great for insulin resistance as a PP mentioned.
