Hospital Visit made me nervous!

So last night I woke up soaked and thought my water broke. We ate a small meal and then headed to the hospital. Once we got there I checked in and waited for the registration lady to call my name. Thank goodness my contractions weren't extreme or close together because this woman took her sweet time. I remember all I could think was "I feel terrible for the moms that come in and they are having contractions two minutes apart and can't talk! This woman is looking for a pregnant lady whoopin!!" After she finally got all of my paper work done and went get her food out of the microwave (yes you read that right, I was interrupting her lunch time apparently.) she had me follow her to the second floor. DIDNT OFFER ME A WHEELCHAIR OR ANYTHING! Finally I waddle my way up to L&D (I had called previously to let them know I was on my way) I got to the front desk and about 7 nurses stared at me as if I was a Martian. Finally after a few awkward seconds one asked if she could help me and I handed her my papers that the lady in the front printed out for me. Instead of reading the papers the lady asked me THE SAME QUESTIONS I was just asked upon my arrival, the answers were on the front page! (Once again the "OMG these poor women who are intensely contracting must want to die at this point!" Thoughts were back) We finally waddled to a triage only to find out the one bed they had open was not clean so I had to go sit in the waiting room. Thank goodness my fiancé was there to rub my back and sooth me, I was on the verge of crying. After about 10 minutes I was placed in a bed and hooked up to the machines and once again asked why I was there (OMG PEOPLE REALLY?!?) Once I was all hooked up they needed to do a cervical exam. The nurse COULD NOT FIND MY CERVIX! It took her three tries!! At first she told me she didn't think I was dialated at, on the second attemp she said she felt something flat but she wanted to try one more time (have no idea what that means), and then finally on the third time she says "OH! Yep! There it is! 3cm girl!" They monitored me for an hour but I didn't progress and my strip test for my waters came back negative (I peed the bed lol) and they let me go home. Once I got home I needed the potty and discovered the nurse had ripped me from all of the exams! I am not looking forward to going back!

What are yall opinions? Am I just hormonal or does it sound like I should go to another hospital for delivery?

Re: Hospital Visit made me nervous!

  • Yeah id be upset. They sound super un organized. I definitely didn't experience anything like that for the birth of my daughter. Could you call your OB today and discuss the situation? They might be able to make some suggestions as well!

  • That sounds awful!  Sorry you had to go through that.  Good luck!!!

  • Ugh,sounds terrible. So sorry to hear a hospital treated you this way. I think I'd be looking for a new birth place.
Upside to all of this is next time you go in, all your paperwork should be done and all they should have to do is get you up to L&D, but that isn't much of an upside. I know it's late in the game but I'd be researching other hospitals in the area that accepts my insurance and if my doc could deliver there. That, or I'd be on the phone with HR, or whoever you call, to discuss the situation and how unsatisfied you were with your experience and how you were treated.
  • What a bad experience! I went in with a bladder infection that was causing mild contractions but my hospital treated me very well. My nurse actually delivered a baby next door but was still very attentive to me and my situation wasn't super critical. I would definitely be making some calls to let that hospital know of your experience.
  • While your experience does sound incredibly disorganized and frustrating, please know that it is not unusual to be asked the same questions several times. I'm a RN and I will ask my patients questions that I know they've been asked, because I want to hear the story from my patient first hand. Otherwise you end up playing a game of "telephone" and the story gets muddled. Also, I always ask my patients certain questions that I "know" the answer to- such as allergies- in case the person before me didn't do as thorough a job as I would hope.
I do think you should contact the hospital and speak with the department manager to express your concerns though. Having to wait for the clerk to get her food is unprofessional and not appropriate. Also, the staff should have been more welcoming and accommodating.
  • That sounds terrible! My office requires we pre register at our hospital, and with my first there was no waiting or paperwork...i was coming in at 2 min apart, unable to talk but no one even asked me anything. My husband answered a few questions then a quick check in triage to make sure I was active, place my heplock, etc and then I was in my room for the duration.
