Charlie Horse

Last night at 2 am I woke up with the worst charlie horse in my calf. Very painful. So as I am writhing around in pain, cussing and being crazy, my partner jumps up starts saying "OMG is it the baby?! ARE YOU IN LABOR??". Couldn't help but be amused as I am still in pain from my leg. Here's hoping he is a little calmer when the event does happen!

Re: Charlie Horse

  • Im struggling with them too!!
  • Loading the player...
  • Yeah they are really no fun
  • I have been having these too, it's awful! I'm trying to eat a banana before bed and do some stretching, it seems to be helping.

I scared my husband the other day too…I was sitting up next to the table and my phone was on the edge. When I pushed my chair back my phone got stuck between my belly and my boob and I ended up pulling it off the table sticking straight out like that! I immediately pushed my chair back all the way and said "Oh my god look what happened!" and he jumped up looking terrified and said "DID YOUR WATER BREAK?!?" Haha nope, sorry hubs.
  • They are the worst!  I have been taking a tablespoon of plain yellow mustard (I know, it sounds gross, just hold your nose) before bed and haven't had one in awhile.  It sounds weird, but if you google it, people swear by it!  I figure it can't hurt.
My husband also gets them really bad in his calf, so he knows the signs.  Besides, the things I scream when I get one of those in the middle of the night are far scarier than anything I yelled in labor.
  • My calf is still sore from a charlie horse I had two nights ago!
  • @falchas That is really interesting, I wonder why that works..

I think I read this from another poster on here, if you stretch your calf so your toes are pointing up towards your shin (that makes sense, right?) as soon as you feel one coming on, it goes away. Been working for me anyway, the last one I had before reading this tip left my calf sore for like three days!!
  • I used to get them alllllll the time before I got pregnant. I figured I'd get them like crazy now but surprisingly I haven't had one!
  • Definitely toes pointing up immediately... that has been saving me!
  • Try bananas. They worked wonders to stop mine
  • I've been drinking Calm. It's a magnesium tea and it definitely helps! But I used to wake up yelling from them all the time lol

This actually makes me feel a bit better about labor.

  • Potassium is good but if you don't have magnesium in your system you won't absorb the potassium. Take an Epsom salt bath, your skin absorbs magnesium that way. Calf cramps are the worst.
  • Thanks, I will try these suggestions! Glad other mamas are dealing with this too.
