Vitamin D Deficiency

Anyone else having to take Vit D for a low level? I got put on 5000IU/day. I don't drink much milk so I suppose that's why my levels are so low...

Re: Vitamin D Deficiency

  • Me! My doc tested it in July and it was super low. Lactose intolerant here, so not a lot of milk either. I do, however, spend a lot of time in the sun. I guess some people's bodies just need a little more. I'm on 50,000mg once a week + 2000/day. Is your doc going to retest you in a few months?

  • I didn't get tested for deficiency, but my OB did say that the new recommendation is 2000 IU for any woman who is pregnant. This is in addition to my prenatal, so yay! 2 pills to choke down while nauseous. ;)
  • I think she retest with every lab draw. I'm not sure as I haven't spoken to her just her MA since my labs came back.
  • My midwife called me yesterday and told me to add 5000IU daily because my Vit D levels were so low. I feel like my grandmother having to take so many pills!
  • I don't take a vitamin D pill. I take it via a dropper (from Carlson labs? I think is the brand?) I got it off amazon. It only has vitamin D in it with a light oil. It is easy to take and doesn't taste bad.
  • I don't drink milk either. Do you have Vitala eggs located near you? Some brands of eggs (such as Vitala) have high Vitamin D because of what the chickens are fed (fish meal). One Vitala egg has 100% of the RDA for Vitamin D. Canned sardines (with bones) are also a good, cheap way to get in Vitamin D and calcium. They take some getting used to if you've never had them before.
  • Have you ladies tried almond milk? I have no problems drinking regular milk, but I switched to almond milk a year ago. My husband even prefers it in his cereal now.

missnc77 And it makes smoothies so creamy and delicious. The half almond half coconut one gives smoothies a little tropical flavor twist too
  • Yes, I was diagnosed with a Severe Vitamin D Deficiency earlier this year and started taking 50,000 IU a week about a month ago. Then found out I was having baby #2 in May.
