Hey, is anyone else involved in singing stuff you want/need to sing for but are so short of breath you get lightheaded trying to make it through a 3-minute song?! This is something I am having trouble finding info on but I am worried cause when I try to sing I fear I am cutting off circulation to the baby, from how lightheaded I feel.
Re: Anyone else too out of breath to sing?
Keep practicing deep diaphragmatic breathing and get creative with phrasing if necessary. I did find that for some weird reason 2nd tri was my sweet spot with my son. My voice dropped in pitch a bit, but became much richer and velvety. I actually was booked a lot more during my pregnancy than any other time! But, it was hard to do high sustained "glory notes". Instead, I would do a lot of vocal runs and ad libs to cover my lack of breath support as things got squished in there.
As far as safety for the baby, make sure you don't lock your knees and move around slightly while singing if possible. Standing stick straight for too long can compromise your circulation, but gently swaying and keeping your knees bent and springy helps to keep things flowing. Also, take breaks as needed and continue to work on vocal stamina using exercises like a sustained breath long hiss and possibly look into circular breathing. It is a difficult technique that I learned playing bass clarinet, but can get me through in a pinch.
