I tried to take a gestational diabetes glucose ttest :(

TRIED is the optimal word here. Has anyone else had to take the three hour version of this test? They gave me this HORRIBLE red drink that tastes like baby tears and disappointment. Im supposed to get a blood draw every hour for three hours. With my sensitive taste buds and bad morning sickness cant seem to keep the drink down! I think I just scared this poor old lady in the Kaiser parkinglot. She thought I was vomiting blood. I have no idea how I will be able to take this test when my stomach rejects it. I only lasted an hour before hurling. :(

I've never heard of this test being done so early. I thought it was typically done in second trimester when nausea isn't so bad :/ what's your doctor say?

I was just thinking the same thing... I didn't take this until I was 26ish weeks pregnant with my first kid. But holy hell did I feel sick after the 1 hour one. I never had to do the 3 hour one, but I can imagine it's not fun. I'm sorry :(
  • I also didn't realize it could be administered this early. Regardless, that sounds like a really awful and unpleasant experience. Ugh! I hope you did something good for yourself after!

  • This is really early for this test, especially the 3 hour. Did you do the 1 hour test first? My practice initially does that and then if your results come back and they're concerned they do the 3 hour.

I passed out because they couldn't find a vein to draw blood at my three hour and my doctor said not to worry about it bc I was borderline. Maybe ask if you could do it in a couple weeks when you'll feel better?
  • I agree with PP - I've never heard of the glucose tolerance test being given this early. Especially the 3-hr one. Is there a reason your doctor wanted you to do this so early on?

  • Definitely agree with PP. I didn't get my testing done until around 25 weeks with DS. I passed the first test luckily and didn't have to do the 3 hour.

  • With my DD I had to do it 3 times. I kept throwing it up. On the 3rd try I threw up in the room when they were about to do the blood draw. I felt so bad for blowing chunks in front of them.
  • I've taken it this early with 3 pregnancies (including this current one). In my case, it's due to my BMI and family history. They still repeat the test at around 28 weeks.

To answer the original question, the 3 hour test is only hard because you will be starving the whole time. Take a book or a craft project to pass the time. If you don't pass the 3 hour, don't be scared you can control gestational diabetes, you just have to stay on top of it.

  • I have a friend who ate jelly beans instead of the drink. She wanted a healthier alternative to the drink. I personally see nothing wrong with it. It's purpose is for a test. You're not drinking that high of sugar everyday. But with that said, maybe talk to your dr about alternatives if you can't keep it down.
  • Thanks all. Hmmmm i wonder y I had to take it so early!!!!? I didnt pass the one hour one. Today has been the sickest Ive ever been. That drink effed me allllll the way up. I cancelled my entire day.
  • Maybe see if they have a different flavor? My office said red was the worst. I drank an orange one.

I'm sorry! Hope you can get this figured out. The 3 hour sucks, that's for sure.
  • Before you take another GD test I would definitely ask why you are taking it this early on. I'm not a doctor but this raises an eyebrow.
  • I don't have any advice, but I wanted to say your "baby tears and disappointment" line made me laugh.

I'm sorry you had such a hard time with the test :(
  • @TheThornBird -- lol im REALLY sarcastic.
  • @Jenly17 i honestly dont plan on taking it again. I hve the right to say no. I took the first one which was an hour. (Took it BEFORE mornin sickness at 5 weeks). I tested .1 outside of standard range. Id rather just have a GD diet from here on out, rather than test again. Yesterday was a horrible day because of that test. I was SO sick all day. Missed work and cancelled two social appointments i had planned for over a month. EFF that!! Cc @BuzzBee614 @cortney626 (is 626 your area code? • I'm wondering why they made you take it this early, too. Maybe you had some blood work come back with high blood glucose numbers?

I took mine at ~27wks last time (failed the 1hr by one single solitary point, because I had pasta for lunch first, ugh), and I hated the three-hour so much. I felt so dizzy and awful. :(

I hope that, if they're making you do it this soon, that it goes as easily as possible next time they have you try. :(

  • @soralette i failed the forst by a point as well. I have no plans of retaking this test lol
  • Although the test is not pleasant if you're taking it early bc the doctor recommends it you probably shouldn't deny it. If you do have gestational diabetes it can be serious. And the diet to control sugar level is not easy and will not always work. I had GD and had blood sugar that would drop very low. You'd need to talk to a nutritionist before you considered any diet changes!
  • @NigerianHair not my area code, but my wedding date. But I'm not far from the 626 area. I'm in Whittier. I have family in Covina, San Dimas, Glendora.
  • @meagkayy4 totally understood. I have Kaiser and it's run like a machine lol. They just wanted to cross it off my list. My tests came back normal.
  • @cortney626 oh okay. Not too far. Im in Passdena and i work near San Dimas (in Pomona at Cal Poly univ)
  • Okay good! Maybe take it after 20 weeks like normal non risk would do :) by then morning sickness should be better and it may be easier.
