Meal for new mommy - Ideas please!

Hi Everyone!

I am part of a mommy group in my town and one of the things we do is sign up for different days to bring a home cooked meal to a member who has just had a baby. I know, I know... very stepford wife-y but I think it's a nice gesture. This new mom lives with her husband, 19-month-old, and newborn. I would love any ideas on foods you ladies would like to get so that I can decide what to make. She didn't provide any specifications so she's open to anything. I'm thinking of offering her two choices. What do you think?

  • My go-to is Chicken Enchiladas and Mexican rice OR lasagna, salad, and garlic bread.

Whatever you take, make sure there's enough for leftovers!! And use disposable containers so you don't have to worry about getting your dishes back!

  • Beef stroganoff, baked zitty, chicken cordon blue, any type of casserole really
  • Anything Texmex... yumm!! Or comfort food. That's always good... food in general is good and whatever it is is sure to be appreciated!
  • I second the lasagna idea.  That's my family's go-to for parties, funerals, sickness, babies... pretty hard to go wrong.  Throw in a nice bottle of red wine to celebrate new baby and that is a fabulous meal!
Also quiche with a nice salad is a great, easy meal.  Especially since they have a toddler, my little guy liked anything with cheese and eggs in it when he was that age (still does!).
  • A giant container of taco soup. So quick to heat up and easy to customize for anyone in the house! I read somewhere today about how many people stop by with main dishes but neglect sides (and fruits/veggies) so maybe a broccoli salad or a fruit salad?

Oooh, any kind of soup would be a hit with me; I am a soup fiend!  Truth be told, I usually prefer soup to "real" food.  Something hearty would be great for a new mom, like a vegetable, beef, and barley or a chicken/turkey and rice.  If you bake, you could take them a loaf of homemade bread or rolls, too.
  • I say lasagna or enchiladas.. Both freeze well so if they don't eat it right away they can freeze! What a nice idea.

  • This is such a great idea! Wish I knew of something like that around here! Baked pastas are always a great idea(lasagna, Ziti, million dollar casserole)  because like others have said, they freeze and also reheat great. With the weather changing maybe something like a beef stew!
  • I second the taco soup! Yum! And lasagna. Any type of soup really is good, especially with the fall weather. I just made a chicken noodle casserole and froze half of it, that's another idea! Look on Pinterest!

  • My kid eats pasta like a fiend so pasta is always a win. Of course breakfast for dinner would be good too. Pancakes, biscuits and gravy, bacon yum! Have you ever had farmers casserole? It's eggs, breakfast meat of choice, hash browns and veggies of choice all baked together.
  • I made a turkey spaghetti casserole, it turned out pretty good and it's super easy to make!

  • Thanks everyone! I think that a cheesy beef macaroni casserole with a side salad or another pasta casserole would be good as it's easy for me to make, it's yummy, and her toddler will love it (I think). I'll even drop off some fruit since you guys made a good point that people often forget sides and desserts.

Do you guys think that I should drop off the casserole pre-bake so she can pop it in the oven herself and eat it fresh or take it fully cooked?

  • I would take it pre-bake with cooking and freezing instructions. That way it will be fresh and yummy when they are ready to eat it.
  • Super easy recipe & so yummy!
  • I made baked gnocchi with chicken in a tomato sauce last night. It was delicious and healthy. That could work well.
  • There is a chicken and rice casserole we do that I'm craving once LO gets here and I can eat all the carbs again.  Rice mixed with cream of mushroom (add extra mushroom) chicken thighs on top of that and a garlic herb butter over the chicken.  It's super easy and yummy.  It just needs about an hour in the oven and it's awesome sauce.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • @TacoSarah that sounds so good. I love gnocchi. Do you mind sharing the recipe? :)
