What's your typical day look like?

hi! Curious to see what others' day with babe looks like...in terms of baby's patterns.

My girl is two days past 2 weeks old. She still pretty much just eats and sleeps in 2-3 hour windows.

So,

-I nurse her, she falls asleep at the breast
-she sleeps between 1-3 hours (at night it's always 3. I have to wake her to feed her).
-she wakes, we change her diaper, if she's alert and content we'll talk/sing/ tummy time for awhile , or she may just want to eat right again
-annnnd that cycle repeats! :)

Including feedings, she's never awake longer than 1-2 hours at a time. Sometimes it's wake/feed/sleep right away.

Anyone else?

Re: What's your typical day look like?

  • My LO is 9 weeks old, but her due date is coming up and so she's basically a newborn now. So she sleeps a ton. I was keeping her on a pretty tight schedule eating every 3 hours, even at night. But I let her skip now.
-we feed approximately every 3 hours.
-she usually stays up for at least a few minutes. So I usually sing or read or do yoga then.
-once she's asleep I lay her down until she wakes up again.
-I change her diaper at least each fed.
She stays pretty tired right now, and our nurse told me since she has trouble maintaining her temp that skin to skin with me leaning back a little was plenty tummy time for now. She usually goes to sleep immediately when we do that!

I have two older girls, so every moment of my day is subject to change!! :)

  • @str13 thanks! It's helpful to hear your "schedule". These little ones sure love their sleep! :) Does your baby ever cluster feed? Meaning, go through periods of eating every hour or so? Mine will go through one 4 hour period a day of feeding every 1-2 hours. It's exhausting, but I'm BFing so I've read it's good for my supply and indicative of what she needs. So...I'm rolling with it!
  • My little girl fights sleep. She's awake most of the day, fussy in the evenings, but then I usually get 2 decently long stretches (4 or 5 hours) at night. As exhausting as the days are, it is nice to get to spend so much time with her awake before I have to go back to work. She's been like this since she was 2 weeks old, with maybe 30 minute naps during the day in between feedings.
  • Depending on his mood each day he will want to eat between every 1-2.5 hours. The every hour ones are exhausting so we dont enjoy those!
He usually sleeps the day away in between all feedings until the evening and we just take turns cuddling with the baby.
He's usually wide awake around 2am and stay awake for awhile so that's our play time. I wish it was mid day but this was his wake up time in my belly too!

This is my daughter too! She's 17 days old. It makes getting household chores done, but I love how alert she is during the day
  • @chelseajeanene Yes! Those 1 hour feedings are exhausting. My babe has a good stretch of those every day now...for maybe 4-5 hours in a row. I just keep remembering that this will pass! And then I'm sure I'll be longing for it! I'm trying to stay as present as possible and enjoy every moment!
  • For the most part, he eats every three hours, followed by as much wake time as I can squeeze out of him, followed by sleep, then repeat. Except after his 6pm feeding, I start his bedtime routine around 7 and that includes a bath, book, kisses from DH and DS1, feeding and diaper change. I then let him sleep until he wakes me.

I followed the same routine with DS1 and we got to STTN within 6 weeks. I yearn for a 4+ hour stretch of sleep!
  • @Jenten810 Does your babe fall asleep after feeding? Or do you soothe him/her to sleep in other ways? Mine so far only falls asleep when feeding/comfort sucking. Curious to hear your experience
  • We're on a pretty steady 3-hour cycle with one exception at night. 2-week old LO sleeps almost all the time, except when we're doing our diaper/feeding/pumping routine. We've already dropped one nighttime feeding, so we do this routine at 7AM, 10 AM, 1 PM, 4 PM, 7 PM, 10 PM, 2:30 AM. I try to make sure he's awake usually in the late afternoon/early evening after DH gets home from work. When he is awake it's usually tummy time on my chest.

Sometimes I feel guilty because I feel like it's too easy. I handle the weird sleep schedule well and LO seems happy and growing.
  • My feedings are 7 am, 9, 11, 2, 5, 7, 10, 1 am, 4 am. Abouts. At night she sleeps in her rock n play. During the day she only wants to sleep on her parents. So... Netflix while the other tends chores. I will be breaking out the Moby soon now that she's bigger.

  • Our days don't have a steady pattern yet. DD2 is 2 weeks old, sleeps a lot... with occasional 1h alert periods. She tends to cluster feed late evening (starting around 10pm). It feels easier this time around. BFing has been easier, and where she was eating so well I never woke her to eat. She tends to wake, eat, burp, get a bum change, eat again, then either fall asleep eating or stay awake and drift off on her own.
