Colic?

Is it too early to assume my 16 day old is colicky? I can't figure out what to do for him. He is always crying. I feed him and change him but that doesn't help. I tried the gas drops and gripe water but I don't see much of a difference. I also have tried giving him the similac formula for gas. I am pretty sure that's what it is bc he draws his legs up and just looks to be in pain. I plan to call the pediatrician Monday morning to ask their opinion but I thought some of you may have other thoughts i could try. I am at a loss and can't help but cry myself to sleep when I actually get the chance. Help

Re: Colic?

  • We've had a bit of the same at almost 3 weeks. Gas drops and gripe water don't seem to work, Gerber soothe probiotic drops seem to be helping a little bit. We bicycle his legs and rub his abdomen to help pass gas. It helps a little, but it doesn't seem there's much we can do at this point to help (pedi said its normal at this stage and will pass). Hopefully someone else has advice, I feel your pain!

  • We've tried to bicycle his legs too. The only way I can get him to sleep is on his belly which I know is frowned upon so I only do it when I know I can watch him closely.
  • I think true colic means crying for loooong periods of time (more than 1-3 hours in a day).

I think it's (unfortunately) normal what you are going through with your LO. Ours is fussy from 6-8/9 every night unless she's nursing or sleeping.

We've done gas drops, tummy rubs, burping her with her tummy down on my leg, bicycle, etc. Those seem to help some, but cluster feeding during that time is what works best for her.

Good luck! It will get better.

  • The gerber probiotic drops did seem to help DD2. We thought she had colic and it turns out she has a sensitivity/allergy to milk. She also stayed constipated and would just scream because she couldn't poop. Once we got on the right formula she did much better.

    What formula did you try?

I ate beans the other day and it caused my baby girl to have awful gas. The only thing that calmed her down was laying her belly down across my lap and using both hands to pat her back. She also enjoyed a bath. The bath allowed her to relax and pass a good bowel movement. Her gas lasted 2 days.
  • @smholroyd What do you mean by "all the time"? Is he/she crying nonstop most of the day/night? Or just at certain periods? Mine is usually pretty content when she's (fed/napping/briefly awake and alert for a short period) throughout the day...but there's a good 5 hour stretch in the late afternoon/early evening where she's FUSSY. Crying/whining unless she's on my boob...pulls herself off and cries/whines again until Input her back on. I've read this is totally normal for newborns and they outgrow it by about 6 weeks to 2 months.

Mine has gas, too. I try what others have suggested above. Not much I can do but help her through it.

Let us know what your doctor says, please!
  • We were going through the same thing with dd starting at about 3 weeks old. What works for us is that I eliminated dairy from my diet, which made a world of difference. Also, we start the gas drops at her first evening feed and give them at the beginning of every feed through the early morning one. I've also found that putting her in a warm bath when she's fussy instantly calms her down and cuts baby witching time down to a 3rd of what it was without the bath.

Also, are you giving baby Vit D drops? We have tried three different brands and she gets horribly gassy and an upset stomach, so we are done with the drops. She'll get her vit D a different way.
  • If the gas is really bad try a product called the windi. (It's by the people who make the nose frida) it's like a little tube you put in their bottom and it works instantly. Gross I know, but when you're desperate it's a life saver.
  • The original poster mentioned you used the similac formula for gas, we also used this because our baby girl was a little fussy and just seemed uncomfortable. We used that formula for a week and it caused her to become constipated and made things worse. We switched her back the similac advantage and within a day or two she was much better..just a thought that maybe try a different formula.
  • Thanks for the suggestions.

We ended up stopping the gassy formula as well. He wouldn't poop for long periods of time, sometimes 15 hours and i could tell he is in pain. I went back to Breast milk so that he could at least have a bowel movement. I may try cutting certain things from my diet to see how that goes but I'm not convinced that's the problem as I eat mostly fruits and vegetables (avoiding gassy vegetables) and I have avoided spicy foods. I'll see how today goes and maybe call the pediatrician this afternoon or tomorrow
