Hot yoga junkie- withdrawal

Hey everyone,

I've been steering clear of hot yoga for the last two weeks, since I read that it can disrupt neural tube formation snd cause defects leading to things like spina bifida. Not cool. I miss it so much and I just don't find regular (not hot) yoga the same.

If I can regulate my body temp through breathing and recovery positions (if needed) and stick to early am classes (when the studio isn't as hot), why wouldn't this still be good for me and baby.

Also, haven't the neural tubes already formed, mostly?

Any opinions?

  • I too love hot vinyasa (not bikram) but giving it up for 9 months to ensure baby safety was an easy choice. There is no way to regulate baby temps in that kind of heat- remember baby can't sweat! Just getting into child's pose isn't going to reduce your core temps to a safe temp for baby. It sucks i know! I miss my kickboxing and hot yoga too. But it's only temporary. And maybe you will be able to find something you like just as much as a temporary replacement.

  • One more thing to add Incase you don't know... But in 2nd tri you shouldn't be doing any "normal" yoga anyways as some positions really aren't safe. I started prenatal... Yawwwnnnn. Can't wait to get back To my hot and power classes.

  • I teach Bikram style- we recommend taking first trimester off- after that if you have a regular practice of at least 6 months- it is totally safe to come back and do, be sure to run it by your dr. tho! Ask your studio for pregnancy modifications and be sure to follow them and take it easy. If your studio doesn't have them printed, you can find them online or thru Bikram headquarters ( if that's the style you do)The class definitely transitions from less of a butt kicking to a gentle stretch class. There are a few postures you skip and at that time you can take your temperature to be sure all is well, or you can step out if you need. Bikram method pregnancy series was developed along with doctors and is safe for mom and baby as long as you listen to your body. Put yourself by a door, or anywhere you can get a draft. As a teacher, room is hottest- in my opinion- when it's warming up in the morning. The heat is just continuously blasting to warm the space. The next class after that, the room is warm and heat doesn't have to run as long to get to temp. Be sure you're adding plenty of water to your intake! Some teachers at my studio have practiced all the way thru- I am waiting until 2nd trimester. So much changing and happening in first trimester! I do sometimes go inbetween classes and practice when heat is off- or you can do at home. Can't wait to get back to a class in 2nd trimester!
  • I'm a power yoga instructor (I teach only hot classes) and I plan to keep teaching and practicing throughout this pregnancy. You should be safe to continue your practice, but definitely talk with your doctor and of course listen to your body. With my first pregnancy I stopped hot classes but continued regular temp yoga for the entire 9 months. I was able to get through a long labor and I attribute a lot of that to yoga and Crossfit throughout my pregnancy. Hope you both find some kind of exercise that keeps you healthy and happy for the next 9 months.
