Pacifiers

LO is almost 4 weeks old and still has trouble taking a pacifier. Not only does he have lots of trouble just taking it but when he finally does take it he just spits it back out after a minute and starts crying. Its not that he's hungry because he does this after eating too. So far he's been exclusively breastfed so maybe that's why he's confused? I've heard and read that pacifiers are a huge help in soothing a fussy baby. I've tried the soothies and the newborn nuk pacis but he just won't take them well. Is there a pacifier that would work better for him? Or will some babies simply never take them?

Re: Pacifiers

  • DD2 never would take a paci, DD1 loved hers. She uses Avent pacis, however she never met a paci she didn't like! Our nurse told us to give S her paci let her suck on it for a moment. When she had a good latch on it, pull on it just a little. Not enough to take the paci, but to make baby suck a little harder. It's supposed to help baby figure out how to keep the paci in.
It's okay if baby doesn't take a paci, they will find another way to soothe themselves!

  • some babies never take them, and some prefer one type over another. my LO took one happily, til she got thrush; now she spits it out and cries. I expect once that clears up she'll probably take it again. (I hope!)

I've heard good things about these.

  • Thank you thank you ladies!
  • My older two used soothes so I bought a soothe for LO as well. Not a fan. Received a mam pacifier as a free sample and she has taken to it. She needs help keeping it in, but it is helpful to get her off to sleep during the witching hour. I do encourage her when she starts sucking a finger or thumb because I have found that self soothing skill to be invaluable with my older two. If your LO does not take the pacifier she will find other ways to soothe herself.
  • I agree with the mam paci, I also got one as a sample and my LO loves it more than any other one we've given him.
  • My DD1 didn't take to either the MAM or NUK paci's but LOVED her Chicco paci. Not sure if they sell those where you live but thought I'd throw in that option too.
  • Although he hates the bottles, my son likes Tommee tippee pacifiers. Those and whatever the green ones are that most hospitals use.

  • My baby's not picky, lol. She'll suck on my finger, her hand, her daddy's nose if he leans down to kiss her, but her favorite has been the NUK pacifier.
I know people look down on kids sucking their thumbs, but I think it's good for them to self soothe.
  • We are big MAM pacifier lovers over here. They're rhen only ones both my daughter's would take. Like @str13 said, try tugging to create resistance and teach them to keep it in. I also tap lightly on it and that seems to make them want to keep it in their mouth. Some babies like em, some don't.
  • We got Nuk pacifiers and my LO used them until we gave him the sample MAM one from when we registered. Now he won't take anything else. We are hopefully getting some more today. Only one bink is a little worrisome. I love the MAM ones.

  • Try different sizes? DD1 skipped to a larger size before she would take it.

  • Some babies just don't like them. I tried a ton of different sizes and types with my first and he never got into them. This one will take a smoothie sometimes.
  • MAM is the only pacifier our LO will take unlike my other two children who would take anything.
