Any other realtors out there?

I'm a realtor and have been thinking about how to handle work with the baby coming. Our office is very close knit and I have plenty of agents who could help me out with different things. I'm very fortunate that I can work from home a lot, but I'm trying to decide when to stop pursuing new deals (don't want the stress of a closing the week of labor for example) and how to handle my listings while I'm taking time off with the baby. Do any of you in this career or something similar have a specific plan set up? This is my first and everyone I know in the business got started after having children.

Re: Any other realtors out there?

  • I don't have an official plan set up but I'm in a similar business. Do you know what the ebb and flow of deals tends to look like around your due date?
I run a financial services practice, and usually around Dec 20th people start postponing meetings til after the new year. They typically don't commit to a precise meeting because of the craziness of the holidays, and ask me to call them back the first week or two of Jan, a few days after the new year. With being due Jan 20th, any new cases will be done jointly in January so another rep can go out on the case if I can't do it. Otherwise, I'll just do phone conferences until it's time to go.

I'm nervous about maternity leave too and balancing my business. This is my first child, and I'm one of 3 women in our firm (apart from staff) and the first to have a child, so it's new to me and everyone else!

  • @ccoleeman It should be somewhat similar to what you're saying. Most buyers will stop looking as much in Dec and start back in Jan. Guess I'll just figure things out as I go! I just need to find a good balance. I will obviously want to spend as much time as possible with the baby yet find a way to keep my business going just enough that I can jump back in when I'm ready.
  • It's crazy how complex it can be! The flexibility of running your own practice is nice but it comes with a lot of responsibility and planning. I hope your leave goes well! :)

I'm not currently in real estate, but I used to be. Personally, I would never stop pursuing new leads! $ in the bank, ya know? What I would do is talk to an agent in my office about partnering up for a short time. The two of you could make plan to hand off deals at a certain point in time and come to an understanding about splitting commissions. Good luck!
ETA: if all your files/paperwork (hello spreadsheets!) are on point and the agent you partner with is a good one, you'll have no reason to stress!
  • @hailees I'm sure that's what I'll end up doing. I have considered having a few different ones I trust that can help me out but I may just need to stick to one like you're saying. And I'll definitely make sure we both know up front how our commissions will be split. Thanks for your input!
  • Good luck! Wish I was still commission based so I could reap rewards while on maternity leave :P
