When do you start on your nursery?

i know it's super early, but when do you plan on buying/assembling furniture and start the nesting process? It's our first baby so the nursery is my holiday storage room.... Once I pack up all the Christmas items back in boxes, I guess it's time to start working on it.
Also, where do you buy furniture and decoration?
We already have a crib, my husband has two sons. We just paint it for a fresh look. I guess a mix of ikea, pottery barn and target will do it for me. Also saw cute stuff on etsy. But I get my ideas from restoration hardware, so pretty!!!

Re: When do you start on your nursery?

  • After Christmas should be fine-- DH and I did the same for DS who was due in April and still had plenty of time to get things set. We got furniture from Burlington along with a few existing pieces; decoration and organization a mix of diy, Urban Outfitters, IKEA, Target, and posters.com.

This time, we'll do the nursery later. We plan to have baby in a crib in our room for the first few months and share storage space with DS since we'll either be adding on or moving.

Your ideas sound great. One thing to consider though is how you paint the crib. Many babies chew the crib while teething once they can pull up (DS started between 6 & 7 months) so you might want to be sure it's non toxic/won't peel just in case!

  • We were just talking about this topic this morning, in fact. There are some home improvement things we want to do, along with a nursery. So we decided that we are going to do the home stuff this fall, and then wait for January-ish to get started on the nursery. Right now what will be the nursery is my husband's office. Still don't know if he is going to move his office to where mine is, or what. We also have a guest bedroom that could double as his office. So we've got some rearranging to do, too!

All that being said, I assume the LO will sleep with us, at first. Does this negate the need of a nursery? I don't know.

  • I think we are going to wait until after the holidays. Our nursery is currently being used for storage so we will probably start going through everything in a month or so.
  • With my first I was SO excited to create a nursery. I started ordering furniture shortly after 1st trimester, and after 20 weeks when we found out sex I bought all the accessories. I could have waited waaaay longer and it would have been fine still since I had everything ready to go 3 months early.

With kid number 2, I don't feel nearly as motivated. I guess we have all the big stuff already, though. I'm just terrified of the transition of moving DD into a real bed (she's still in the crib), so I think that's why I'm putting off thinking about it :((.
  • Definitely waiting until the 2nd trimester-- I'm too exhausted now!

This is our second child and I don't think we're going to paint the room, so most of the work will just be going through previous items, washing, and organizing.  I know I wasn't very good about keeping clothing sizes together, so it may be quite a job.
  • I'm getting all my sisters baby bins so I can start going through things around Thanksgiving. Before that we'd like to have the room/closet cleaned out. My parents are gifting us the nursery furniture so we'll do that in February when they come visit.

I've made a list of tasks and plan to start crossing off one task a week for now.
  • I'm very eager to do this. At only 5 weeks I made DH sort through boxes he had in our storage room/ future nursery. I'm trying to hold myself off until the holidays but I love furniture rehab projects so we'll see how well I hold out.

  • I really want to buy used furniture and baby supplies. I think the baby industry is as bad as the wedding industry in playing off of people's fears and making them think they have to shell out for new supplies in order to be good parents. So that being said, I'll probably buy everything on Amazon, Craigslist, and Goodwill (except for car seats - those will be new). I can't imagine we'll start working on the nursery before the 3rd trimester.

  • We're definitely going to wait until after the scan for gender. We painted the nursery bubblegum pink for our daughter so we'll need to know if it will stay that way or repainted

  • We haven't started so to speak, but the nursery will be where my current office area is so we've started cleaning up in there and getting things organized there and around the house to get things out of the room and get my new office area set up.

Once everything is out that room is going to need a lot of work. It did when we moved in but we just tolerated it till now, but we need to replace the flooring, re-do the baseboards, replace/refinish the old door, patch some old nail holes in the walls, paint, etc. We'll probably start that pretty early just bc the room needs it anyway.
  • Once I'm in my second trimester. I'm convinced I'm having a boy which is just as well bc the room we have for LO is DH's man cave and it's Auburn orange and blue so I don't have to worry about paint and extra decor bc we've already got DH's jerseys from college and high school on the wall. I'll probably take down his awards though. Nesting for me is more doing freezer meals, putting together and arranging where I want everything to go and then changing it 100 times, and sleeping haha.

You scan for sex...gender comes way later.
  • We haven't had a nursery since #4. Baby will be in our room. I do need to start over on the bigger items (swing, bassinet, etc.), but I'll start that after Christmas.
  • Right now DS is in the nursery so we need to get his big boy room ready, which currently is filled with just stuff. We'll probably wait until we know the gender to actually start buying new items for the nursery.
@Bluejay3030 how soon will you be transitioning your DD? DS sleeps sooooo good in the crib, I don't want to mess with a good thing LOL.

  • @zekesmommy611 - I am going to put it off as long as possible... Maybe March (I'm due May 3rd). She also sleeps well in her crib still, and I KNOW it's going to be a struggle to change it up, especially since she's probably going to have to move rooms, too. I'm sooo afraid, lol. X_X
  • This is such a hard one for me. DD slept in our room for over a year. Her room was so adorable yet we only used it for storage. By the time she did sleep in it I felt it was way to babyish and had to redo it to be toddler friendly. So I'm struggling to decide if I should even bother this time. I absolutely love decorating so it'll be hard to do nothing.

  • I started working on my 1st's nursey around 20 weeks. I plan to reuse the furniture and bedding if it's another girl or just redo bedding and decor if it's a boy. I'll probably start that in February and transition my daughter to her big girl room.

I bought the Jenny Lind set by Davinci off Amazon. It was pretty inexpensive, cute, and non toxic.

  • Hard to say for me too.

I'm going to keep a bassinet in our room, as our house is split bedrooms and quite a trek to get to the other side.

We're going to have to have my youngest girls share a room, and probably give our oldest the upstairs half story. I hate to make all three girls share a room, I don't find that fair.

As far as the nursery style, I'm pretty simple. Our home is in neutrals and our room is black/white/gray/tan. Was thinking of keeping it somewhat gender neutral. I think ultimately the decor and styling will be done after the gender reveal.

  • We moved our first kid out of the nursery and into his "Big Boy Room" for his 3rd birthday. We'll probably start revamping it for Baby #2 ... Hell if I know, actually. Second tri is going to be busy (SSIL due in November, Xmas in December, SIL due in January, DS's birthday is in February), but I'll probably try to start then anyway and end up leaving it 'til the third trimester. Mostly, it's just sorting through old baby clothes and finishing the decorations we didn't finish last time, ha.

  • It's a mix for us. We've already painted the room a light cream color, and we've purchased closet organization. We're looking at cribs and furniture to get an idea for what we like, but we'll wait until the second trimester to buy furniture, and no decorations until we know little nugget's gender.
