Formula

I'm a Ftm and I just wanted to know if it matters on the temp of formula to give baby?

Re: Formula

  • FTM confession!!! You're meant to give formula lukewarm/skin temp do you put a little on your wrist and it's meant to feel the same if not slightly cool.

My confession? I rarely take the time to warm it up because I rarely have the time. Little one looses it when she gets hungry - as in goes from calm to screaming in an instant.

Cool/cold formula can cause colic/give your baby worse gas and I have to say that little one has a lot of gas and was really uncomfortable until I mainly moved to breastfeeding.

  • We use room temperature water, I never warm bottles beyond that. Though both my kids have taken bottles straight out of the fridge occasionally.

It all depends on the baby. I know some that can drink it cold, but my daughter and the LO I've nannied for required it at 98 degrees or higher (closer to body temperature. The magic number for the LO I nannied for was 110*F. I used a little thermometer (pointing gun style) to see.

I also stirred gradually while adding the water vs. shaking.

So, if your LO seems to prefer a certain temperature then I would do what works for them as an individual.

My LO used to do this as well (she's almost 4 now, so its been a while). I kept a thermos of hot water ready on the counter top to solve this issue. It stays warm and you can temper with colder water if need be. Also, the keurig is great for this. You can pull just water (4oz) and then mix with cooler water to a just-right temperature. Its worth it to me (in addition to the coffee situation) to have the keurig because I can make all kinds of things (oatmeal, ramen) whatever, in an instant!

  • Okay thank you ladies! I don't use a thermometer but i do put water in microwave for 10 sec before adding the formula. It just gets so tiring to walk to the kitchen especially in the middle of the night.... I think I'll try using a thermos!! Good to know that they can take it room temp as well!
  • I brew just hot water through the keurig and set the bottle in it to warm it. Works wonders and nice and quick. Just test on arm first
  • Little man was in the hospital for the first two weeks. The formula we gave was premixed and room temp. We have been home 6 days and I use room temp water for his formula. He has no issues. I use purified water and mix the formula with that. He seems happy.

  • We use room temperature bottled water and little one drinks it just fine. I had registered for a bottle warmer and ended up returning it because it was just a habit I didn't want to start, if LO starts out with room temperature then they are used to it and you won't always have to warm a bottle for them to drink it.
