Stress levels

I'm just wondering how much stress could be bad for the baby. My job is so stressful right now due to deadlines and millions of phone calls that I regularly have my hands in fists, heart beating faster than normal, shoulders all tense. I just feel like it must be bad for the baby, and I'm wondering if it's a good enough reason to take maternity leave early. Any opinions or advice?

Re: Stress levels

  • It sounds like it isn't good for you either. Personally when I get that stressed I feel sick and over a prolonged period it just gets worse. Maybe you can talk to your OB/MW and your employer and work something out? I'm thinking reduced hours or even telecommuting if possible might be better than taking early maternity leave and not having as much time with baby after delivery.

  • In general, Stress is not good for you. Specifically though, stress will not hurt your baby.
  • What kind of work do you do? My career is extremely important to me and I have crazy days, but when I start to get stressed, I remember that I'm not saving lives! No one will die if I don't get a presentation done perfectly or have to miss a conference call.

    If you're a doctor or nurse, well that's a different story. ;)
  • Thanks, I work in property management providing legal forms to realtors for house sales. So definitely not life or death, but a lot of the Realtors sure act like it! I just need to do a better job of reminding myself what's really important. I'm heading to prenatal yoga today and hoping that I can learn some good breathing techniques.
