Bathing baby

My baby is a week old should I bathe him already or wait a little more I have been cleaning him and making sure he us clean, but I feel like he needs a bath.

Re: Bathing baby

  • I give my little boy wipe downs. Warm soapy water and a wash cloth. I just wash him down to make him feel refreshed

  • I waited until 2 weeks. It helped his skin from getting too dry. In fact with the exception of his hands he hasn't had any dry skin. He was really covered in vernix at birth though. Maybe that helped?
  • Is the cord stump gone and no bleeding/scab? If so you could bathe him if you needed to. It took until my LO was 2.5 weeks until we could do so. The cord stump fell off early, after just one week, but a scab remained. I give him a bath every few days and I wipe him down as needed in between.

  • My lo had his first bath today at 2 weeks old. We waited until his cord stump fell off and his plastibel.
  • I waited for the okay from the doctor to bathe him. He's chord fell off at 7 days and his first appointment was at 8 days. The pediatrician put a little medicine on it because he stump had some puss. She then advises us to wait 2 days after to give him a full bath
  • Our baby's cord stump didn't fall off until he was 14 days old, so we did a few sponge baths at home before that. Just water, and then used shampoo only on his head. He had his first bath "in the water" around 3 weeks old and loved it!
  • Around 3 weeks we did the first bath in water, otherwise we just have him a sponge bath. We bath twice a week but only use soap once a week. Otherwise I use a wet cloth on his face, neck and hands daily.
  • I think the recommendation that you wait until the stump is off is dated. It's been shown that it makes no difference go healing whether the stump gets wet or not. Do what makes you comfortable. We bathed 4 days PP.
  • The stump fell of around 10 days and I've been bathing him daily since. He's in a sling in the infant tub, so still not submerged. I was eager to start incorporating it into his bedtime routine. The first week seemed to be so chaotic at bedtime now that we have two kids.
  • We bathed ours at a week.

  • I really liked this description of how to give a sponge bath:

    https://www.johnsonsbaby.com/bath/how-to-bathe-a-baby/sponge-bath

Our baby gets a bath about once a week, and we did this method until his cord stump was completely gone (after it fell off it scabbed over again so he just got his first full bath this week at 5 weeks old.)
  • My little girl has had three. She is 10 days old.
First at the hospital before we left. They had a class for all mamas to join in if they wanted to. Was pretty cute to be involved with, all of us lined up with a tub each.
Then not long after being home she had a biiiiig #2 explosion (already!!) up to her neck lol only way to combat that was a bath.
And another one today as shed been spitting up a bit and I wanted to freshen her up!
  • The midwife gave us the clear to bathe our LO before the stump falls off. He had his first bath in the tub with daddy (no soap) at two days old as per her suggestion. It was an amazing bonding experience. We dabbed him dry then let him air dry. He wore only a t shirt and diaper afterwards to help with airflow to the stump.
  • Like some PPs have said, tub bathing can be done from birth, you just have to dry the cord area well. I washed her hair over the kitchen sink at 3 days old, did the first bath at 6 days old (in the tub). She loved it! You can wait as long as you want, we did it because her bum was a bit red so I wanted her to get good and clean.

  • We were told you could bath them from 1 week but to just use water for the first month, no soap or products.
  • I bath and cream my baby since day 3 everyday before bed! That keeps him awake for a couple hours but after he has good sleep. That relax him
  • I didn't bathe my baby until her hair started smelling like spit up.  Then I got in the tub with her.  I got in, DH handed her to me, then I washed her, handed her back to DH, got out, and wrapped a towel around us both to keep her warm.
