Low vitamin d and magnesium

went to l&d today for decreased fetal movement. Everything was fine except I was having a few contractions I didn't even know about. They drew labs and sent me home and said they would call with results Monday when my doc is back in. I have my results sent to me and I'm low on mag and vit d. Has anyone one else been low on these? What did they do for it?

Re: Low vitamin d and magnesium

  • I have a vitamin d deficiency. I just have to take vitamin d. Not sure about the mag though.

Taking vitamin d supplements without magnesium can actually be counter-active. Magnesium helps your body absorb vitamin d, and some other vitamins. I think usually vitamin d supplements have some magnesium (?) though you can get magnesium in a lot of foods or in supplements.
Vitiman d is important for a million things, I think the most recognizable being bone development and muscle and nerve wellbeing. If your doc doesn't say anything though, I'm sure it's not a big deal.
That said it never hurts to get more sunshine (vitamin d) or greens and beans and nuts (magnesium and vitamin d).
ETA Easier said than done ;) I've had issues with vitamin d before and all those things do help (you can look up tons more foods that will help too)
  • I haven't personally experienced low D or mag before, but I would try not to let it bother you until you talk to doc.  I've had more than one doctor tell me that at any given point, anyone who has labs done is going to show being low on somethings, high on others.  No one is ever in perfect balance.  I had to go to a cardiologist for some issues I was having early in pregnancy and he dropped this little comment: "Well, your heart looks great, but your labs say you're slightly anemic, that's fine though."  Why you tell me then!?  I think MercyC's advice on diet is great, never hurts to look up some healthy foods that will help with vitamins, we all should be doing that anyways.  Hope you hear from doc soon and glad baby is doing well!
  • I am vit D deficient with this pregnancy. I am on an extra supplement, in addition to my prenatal vitamins. I researched what it means and it is big in helping your baby's bones and teeth develop. Babies can have dental problems later if you don't get enough. Having said that, my doc keeps an eye on it, but it is not a big deal to take an extra vitamin. If you are really low they will put you on a supplement, if they didn't you are probably not low enough for concern. ALWAYS ask your doc to clarify of you are concerned, or call and speak to the nurse about it. Don't worry mama - you will be ok!!!
  • I take magnesium everyday it is great for all sorts of things muscle aches and pains sleep and can help prevent preterm labour there is also research somewhere to say that babies who's mothers took extra magnesium had a better APGAR score when born! I take it when I'm not pregnant to help with sleep
  • I had quite low vitamin D in my first blood draw this pregnancy.  My doc put me on prescription pills once a week for 8 weeks that had 50,000 IU of D3.  Then, they re-tested and my levels were right in the middle of normal.  Now I take 2000 IU's a day in addition to the 400 in my prenatal.

I take vitamin D supplements and I get magnesium infusions. It will depend on how well your mag is for whether or not they infuse you. But in any case, both can be corrected with medication.
