1st Trimester

6 weeks and 6 days with no heartbeat

I went to the ER today because I had very light bleeding and mild cramping. They determined I was 6 weeks and 6 days but there was no heartbeat. They said they can't definitively say I'm having a miscarriage because it's too early. Has anyone else gone to the doctor and had an ultrasound with no heartbeat but still had a healthy pregnancy?

Re: 6 weeks and 6 days with no heartbeat

  • I'm sorry; that is very scary. Was it an internal (transvaginal) ultrasound or an abdominal (external) one?

  • I don't know for sure, but I think I've heard that 6-8 weeks is when you'll hear the heartbeat so maybe it will be next week for you! FX for you!

  • Did they determine 6w6d based on the u/s or your last period?

  • They did both external and internal ultrasounds and determined how far along I am based on the ultrasound.
  • I was just wondering if maybe you were earlier than that. Well I've read many times that a heartbeat can be detected at six or seven weeks so IMO you're not at the stage where a heartbeat can definitely be picked up. Thoughts and prayers to you and I hope you see/hear a beautiful heartbeat at your next appointment!!

  • If you were dated by ultrasound measurements and not by your lmp remember that ultrasound dating can be up to 4 days off. It's more accurate than lmp but not a exact science. Typically FHR is detected my ultrasound between 5w6d and 6w5d. Your measurements could be off just enough that it was a day or 2 too early and it has not started beating yet. Ask for your ultrasound report once it's dictated and typically you will read on there how many weeks you and the 4 day variable . ( 6w6d +/-4)
