Early Glucose Screen

Any STM's or high risk moms that have to take their glucose test early? I had gestational diabetes with DD so they did the one hour test last week (I failed) and the 3 hr test this morning. I should have my results by tomorrow.

I am nervous about the affects on baby if I have it so early this time (18 weeks). With DD the further I progressed in my pregnancy the harder it became for me to control...I controlled it completely through diet until 4 weeks before giving birth...then I had to take oral medication.

Just wondering if any other momma's are dealing with this right now.
Praying this is our take home baby. STICK TURKEY Mommy will miss you everyday my beautiful angel. We love you Lilypie Angel and Memorial tickers M/C on 1/05/11 at 11 weeks.

I am nervous about the affects on baby if I have it so early this time (18 weeks). With DD the further I progressed in my pregnancy the harder it became for me to control...I controlled it completely through diet until 4 weeks before giving birth...then I had to take oral medication.

Yup! I had gestational diabetes with my DS. As soon as they found it, I was put on metformin. This time, they checked me through blood test and told me it was high so sent me to get a 3 hour test done.
I just turned 18 weeks on Wednesday and had the test done last Saturday.
My test wasn't like the one I had with DS. With DS, they had me drink the stuff, then poked my finger and checked my sugar level only for 2 hours because my sugar kept going higher and higher.
This time, I had 2 vials of blood taken and then was given the stuff to drink. Then they took one vial of blood every hour on the hour for the next 3 hours.
I didn't know when my doctors office would get the results so I called and they told me that I am gestational diabetes free this time.
Thank goodness for this because I don't know if this doctors office would have given me metformin again or gone straight to insulin and I would have had a huge problem sticking myself with a needle.

I really don't think it will affect the baby much if you gave gestational diabetes this time because, IMO, even with the last baby, you had gestational diabetes the entire time, but didn't know about it until they did the test around 28 weeks. I think the only thing that changes is the time you know that you have it. Just my opinion though. If you are very nervous or concerned, I suggest talking to your doctor about the possible affects it may have on the baby.

Wishing you the best that your results come back normal like mine did! Keep us updated please.

  • Hopefully I pass too. Although my doctor will make me do this whole process again at 28 weeks if I pass now.

Mine was the same as last time, they bring me back and take a vial of blood. Drink the glucose drink and then take a vial of blood every hour for the next three.

I hope you're right. I'm definately going to talk to my doctor if a fail.

  • I had the same problem. First my blood work came back high, then the 1 hr was high and then I did 3 hr. I passed the three hour but they said I do not have diabetes. So there is hope. Also, if you do it can be controlled by diet and medication. My doctor told the risk with diabetes is a bigger baby but it is totally controllable. Good luck.
  • Usually the risks are having a bigger baby or a baby with uneven fat distribution so if you have a vaginal delivery that puts shoulder dystocia as a risk. Many OB's like to do c-section on their diabetic moms.
Feeling movement is one of the best ways to know how baby is doing so kick counts are something you can do for reassurance.
I'm a type 1 diabetic and STM so I obviously don't get tested but some of the concerns are the same.
  • I had an early test because my son was 11 lbs (did not test positive that time but they say I may have developed it after the test)

This time it was positive, so I went to see a dietician and she had me check my blood 4 times a day for a week (fasting then an hour after each meal). After a week I went to Dr with my numbers and they put me on insulin already!

I take slow acting insulin at night, but they said I may need to start taking it with meals as I get further along.

Honestly you can barely feel the needle, it is only 4 mm. But it takes me 5 min to get the courage, so weird for me to inject myself.

Hopefully this baby will be under 10 lbs ;)
  • I had an early glucose this time because I had GD last time. They skipped the 1 hour and just did the 3 hour and I passed. I hope I pass it again when I take it at 28 weeks, but I don't think it's likely.
