How weird is this name?

I know, it only matters if we like it. But somehow getting anonymous strangers' opinions is helpful in deciding whether to give this kid an unusual name. Hmm :)

Zion David

Honest opinions pls. Tell me if it's awful or kinda cute or somewhere in between. Thank you.

Re: How weird is this name?

  • I like it! Zion is a monument (in the bible) and it's a national park in Utah too! :)
There's actually tons of religious references you should check out if you haven't already. Wiki is a good place to start.

  • Are you religious? That's my connotation with Zion, especially with the middle name David, but that's fine. The name is a bit out there for my style but it's up to you.
  • My nephew's name is Zion, it's not my style but fairly normal I think.
  • It isn't my style, but it isn't a made up word, either. Perhaps you could name him David Zion so that he has a traditional name to fall back on in adulthood if he wishes.
  • Zion sounds like a name. It doesn't sound too out of the ordinary or made-up. I like it. Meanings aside.

  • Lurking from j15. I'm a teacher and there are 6 zions in my fairly small school. It's definitely a name!
  • Appreciate the input. Wow, six? Ha!

So we like unusual names, not in the top 100 on the SS website. Yes, we are Christian. We have two other boys with biblical names, but it seems like slightly different biblical boys names are very popular these days. We have a Josiah, which is now #60 in the country (and two in his karate school). David is after a deceased family member, so we're set on the middle name. Thinking about Ezekiel w/a nickname of Zeke. Seems more like a name than a place (like Zion), but I like the simplicity of Zion, just a 4-letter name.

Gorgeous, classic biblical names like Jacob, Elijah, and Isaiah are too popular for DH (roll eyes) because he was called Tim#4 growing up, with so many kids of his name in his classes. So he prefers more unusual. But I don't want weird, you know?
  • We were planning on going with Ezra if we were having a boy, I don't know if you've considered that one.
  • I love Ezra! My DH can only think of the band Better than Ezra and keeps singing "and it's good...." He's incredibly mature. He vetoed it ;) But great choice! I love Micah, but it's my new nephew's name.
  • For my two cents, whatever they're worth. I don't think it's WAY out there name wise. Not what I would pick, but I'm not religious at all, so it wouldn't make sense for me. I wouldn't blink if I met someone named Zion, although, just for my taste, I prefer Ezekiel & LOVE Zeke as a nickname.
  • Since it sounds like you're interested in a range of input, here's another perspective: I've received a lot of resumes over the years, and unfortunately sometimes that requires snap judgements. Presented with a Zion David Xyz, I'm immediately thinking "super religious, probably home-schooled, and likely didn't see a pg13 movie until he left his parents' house for college."

That obviously wouldn't be accurate, but here I have the benefit of the rest of your post. The name connotes very strong religious associations which often equals sheltered, and for my industry (art/design/architecture), that's generally not a good fit. Other industries it is probably irrelevant though. And btw, it's not a knock on Christian names - I'm a fan of nearly all of the slightly subtler biblical names (like your lo's big brother :)
  • That perspective is absolutely helpful! I did marry a Japanese guy, so we already have a very unusual Asian last name. Sigh. What about a social experiment? We'll name kiddo Mohammed Rodriguez (Asian last name). Teachers reading the roster wil gave no clue who to expect. Totally kidding.

    I appreciate the input, ladies.
  • I LOVE that name! I know a woman naming her daughter blakeleigh... So..... I'll just leave that there and let you put your take on it.

Ha! Case in point about snap judgements. I take everything back - Zion Kurasawa or Yoshimura? GREAT name. Now there's a kid I'd like to meet... Go with your gut, @botan1234 !
  • I think if the song by Lauryn Hill wrote a song about her son named Zion.
  • Two thumbs up!! I love Zion =)
  • I like it. I say go for it!

To me, I was surprised you are Christian because Zion David reads like the most Jewish name ever.

Editing to say.. I do like it.
  • I had a coworker who's sons name was Zion. I didn't think it was weird at all. Never thought twice about it!
  • I think it's a great name!!
  • Love Zion. Ezekiel is a very Amish name to me. Don't know why.
  • I like Zion, but what about Ezra? Biblical, different, never mispronounced, and all-around cute for any age.
