I am crazy to sign up for a 5k, 2 months after baby?

One of my favorite races is the first week of December, and I was thinking about running it this year, but I don't know if that is too aggressive.  I am hoping it could give me some motivation to get moving again.  I have been fairly active this pregnancy - I am walking/waddling at least a couple of miles a day plus other activities, but I gave up running a few months ago, because it was just too uncomfortable.  I think I could get back to being able to run 3 slow miles straight in about 4 weeks as long as I keep walking in the first weeks postpartum.  For the active mamas out there, do you think this is doable or would I just be wasting my money signing up?

  • No way! If you're a runner, you'll be fine. I started walk/jogging at 2 weeks pp once I was cleared with my DS. Started insanity around 5 weeks pp. I think you could definitely do it.

  • Thank you ladies. I'm glad to know that this has been done before and that I am not crazy. I think I will sign up and let myself off the hook from considering making a good time.

  • Lots of people walk 5ks also, so that could be an option for you if your body isn't feeling up to the run yet. It would still get you moving and give you the excitement of a race atmosphere!

I am terrible at running but have always wanted to run a 5K. Since I work every weekend that has always been a problem. Last night I told my husband that I want to take advantage of my 12 week maternity leave and finally do one. We had already decided that we would have a friendly "who can lose xx lbs fastest" competition, so this just adds to the motivation.
  • I'm not a runner at all, but I will say that increased activity can increase your post birth bleeding.  Not to say you shouldn't do it, but be prepared with pads just in case.  Of course you will know how your body is reacting as you get closer to the race.  Good luck and have fun!

  • Not crazy at all! I'm due Oct 5th, and I'm planning to sign up for the 5K I do every Thanksgiving. If I have to walk, then I'll walk, but it'll be nice to get back in a race!
  • If you're a runner to begin with and as long as your delivery isn't complicated - I think you'll be fine!
  • If you can walk it, go ahead and sign up!
You never know how your body will react after birth.
After my son's birth in 2012, I've not been able to sneeze, jump, jog, etc. without peeing myself. I hope you don't get the SUI, that I have. After baby girl is born, I will be having my surgery for SUI 6wks later. Being an active person, SUI has been hard on me.
I can't wait to start jogging again. I'll be waiting until the new year to tackle that. :)
