Early wake ups... Any cure??

so I've posted before about my LO sleep habits. He is up every couple hours and after 5am he's up every 15-30mins. He scratches his face (and leaves many bloody marks no matter how short his nails are) when he is tired so I try to get him down quickly when I see him clawing at his face. Buuuut he wakes up way too early for us both. He's still tired at 5:30-6:30 when he's "up". I've tried letting him play but he only lasts about an hour before he has a melt down from being so tired. Any mums out there that successfully extended morning wake ups? I have tried putting him down later than 7 but he can barely last past 8pm :-/

Re: Early wake ups... Any cure??

  • This morning I also tried putting him back to sleep but after two hours of rocking, nursing, walking, bouncing, and silently screaming to myself... I gave up and brought him to the living room..... I'm sure a melt down is in my horizon :-(

  • My first was a horrible sleeper until 13 months and then he has been a wonderful sleeper ever since! my point is, hang in there mama, it won't be like this forever!

I read Healthy Sleep Habits for Happy Children (or something like that)... It may seem counter intuitive but the book suggests putting a baby to bed earlier to get them to sleep better- we moved bedtime up to 6:30 (which, sometimes my husband doesn't even get home from work until 7, so that stinks) but it does seem to have helped! He still wakes up 1-2 times a night to nurse, but overall he seems less "overtired" His naps are so crappy, maybe 30 mins two or three times a day, but, his overnight sleep is better.

May check the book out- again, nothing we did helped my 1st, but perhaps the tools we learned helped us promote better habits with this baby?
    Good luck!
  • We've been sleep training so I've been reading a lot (recommend goodnight sleep tight by Kim west) and went to a sleep class. The general advice for early risers (Many books say the same stuff) is actually that you may be letting them go to bed overtired and then they sleep poorly. Make sure they are napping well during the day, for 6 months it's only awake 2-3 hours before next nap and try an earlier bedtime. Look for sleepy signs and recognize that they may be late signs and try to get them napping/in bed earlier. It's counter intuitive, but if you get them in bed before they're overtired they will sleep better in general. They need 11-12 hours sleep so try a 6:30 -7 bedtime with a good bedtime routine and work on naps every two hours (wake up by 4:30Pm/5pm) of 1-3 hours and a shorter more optional nap. Once you get their bedtime up to 6:30-7 it's just normal early baby rising.
  • He naps really well now. Usually two hours or at least one hour. Which is amazing. But I have tried the early bed time at 6 and 7pm but he just ends up waking up between 5-6am!!! I will look up the book and hope it passes soon. Can't wait for sleep to be normal again :-(
  • Maybe too much daytime sleep? He shouldn't be sleeping more than 3.5 hrs during the day

  • 5am is a completely normal time for a baby to wake up. Some people are early risers, babies are no different.

Is this trolling? Some babies wake up earlier than others and there is nothing you can do about it. It is just who they are. I have one that wakes up at 5 and another that would wake up at 8 if we let her. We just deal with it.
  • Mine wakes at 4 and I've done a lot to try to change his schedule but I'm over it

  • Thanks ladies for the replies. I guess I just gotta deal huh lol. Glad it's prob just his clock and nothing I've done "wrong".

I don't know...he could be over tired. It's definitely not something you've done wrong though! But my LO was the same waking up early but still being very tired. I moved his bedtime earlier and things have been a lot better. If yours was waking up happy, I'd agree that it was probably just his clock but if he's unhappy, then I'd look elsewhere

How dark is your room? Could be that he's waking with the sun
  • I know people may think I'm crazy but my son goes to bed at 10 wakes up at 5 sometimes even 7 then goes back to bed until 9 I have had problem with his sleep I've moved his sleep up and it got worse so I moved it done when he wakes up at 9 he stays up until about 11 or 12 and take about a two to three hour nap it's just our routine my husband is on third shift so this is the best way for us for him to be able to see his son after his nap his up until 4 or 5 takes an hour nap then takes anther before 8 the he is up two hours we play I get him ready for bed turn the lights off and give him a bottle and he is out he is in his own room when he was in mine since my husband works nights and as to sleep during the day we having thing on windows so nothing can get in i noticed why we moved him he woke up a ton more so we blocked his window and it still didn't work well then I decided to elevate it bed and he has been a wonderful sleeper ps the hall light and his door is always opened so it not pitch black in his room I hope this helps
  • My baby used to sleep all night but she is waking super hungry at least once a night. She has had a bedtime of 830 since birth and its routine for her. I do have to deal with the scratching of the face as well when she is sleepy and that drives me crazy because I can't just let her do that. She is a cat napped during the day but typically sleeps well at night from 830-1am eat and back to sleep until 6 and sometimes eats and back to sleep again
