Butt contractions?

edited September 2015 in September 2015 Moms
Excuse the subject title, I just didn't know how else to phrase it, perhaps rectum (rectal?) contractions?

The expected diarrhea has started a few days ago (which at first was a relief from the 9 months of constipation!) but what happens when I go are these SUPER INTENSE (my neighbors I'm sure can hear me howling) contractions that are coming from the back door. Has anyone experienced this? I called the hospital and they actually had me come in last night where they were convinced I would be going home with baby this weekend, which turned out to be a false alarm (boo hoo!), but these butt contractions that are now spaced out sporadically are continuing. What is this?!

Re: Butt contractions?

  • I HAD THESE YESTERDAY! This is like my 200th instance of false labor but I was sure it was the real thing because it felt like front and back at the same time and like my body was trying soooo hard to poop except not. Ugh so frustrating, lasted an hour and a half at 5 min apart then stopped when I laid down.

  • I had what felt like charley horses is my butt cheeks through most of my labor. Each contraction had me grabbing my rear to try to massage it away. The nurses said they hadn't heard of it before, but that the baby might have been pressing on my sciatic nerve causing the pain. Is that what it feels like? Unfortunately for me, the epidural did nothing for the pain, so I ended up being put on 2 other pain meds to get through the labor. Wishing you an easy labor and delivery!
  • @bonniecouture mine too! Mine stopped once at the hospital (of course) when I was comfortable on my side. I'm back home now and they're back at it again (just had a crazy episode) and it's just pure pain!

    @bhrabanal
    They aren't so much in the fleshy part of the butt but rather inside the anus and shoots up the lower back. It's pretty excruciating. The nurses said they were contractions that were causing the loose stools. I guess I just didn't think they would be happening in this area. I spent some much time mentally preparing for front contractions that I never considered this. Quelle surprise! Wishing you an easy labor as well!
  • I had those and they said it was back labor and I felt them because baby was sunny side up, excruciating pain during labor, epidural didn't ease them at all!
  • Yup, I had these during my labor with DD1, they travelled down my butt, back and legs. Excruciating. Doctor told me it was most likely baby who had been resting/pressing on my sciatic nerve. I've had a few episodes of contractions like this this time around but not as bad as during my first pregnancy so hoping to be spared during this next labor. I was able to do it without an epidural but boy did it hurt.

    I had this too!! It was the only pain I felt during labor and it was such an annoying (yet still painful) pain! Glad I'm not alone...I was thinking it was due to dehydration or something else but you're right, it might have just been a part of labor!
  • This is how my labor started before getting into a more classic pattern. After my son was born, the doctor told me that he must have been pressed quite hard against my lower back / back door area for a couple days as indicated by the shape of his head (which has since normalized). The only thing that helped was having my husband push really really hard against my tailbone area.

    I didn't noticed them until I got my epidural but I had the contractions from my butt all the way to my knees. It was very weird but I was in active labor at that time
