After a scare... Saw the heartbeat!!

After a scary first visit on Sept 10th (thought I was 6 or 7 weeks and only saw a thickened lining), I saw my OB today and saw my little dumpling and his/her heartbeat!!! What an AMAZING feeling. I'm measuring at 6w2d, which is a week later than my OB suspected when she saw my HCG levels after that first visit. Turns out I just ovulated later than I thought and that everything is going well... I'm a FTM and could not be more thrilled.

She said she wasn't going to measure the heartbeat because it was too early and she didn't want to disturb anything... Is that normal?

Big hugs to all you ladies, I'm so so happy. Here's my little dumpling. :)

Re: After a scare... Saw the heartbeat!!

  • Hey! I am also a FTM and had a similar experience. According to my LMP, I was 8 wks 3 days when I went to the OB. But I was measuring 6 weeks 1 day. They did measure the heartbeat and it was 96, which is low, but the doctor said it's typically low at 6 weeks. Maybe your doctor didn't want to worry you over nothing?

They took my HCG and progesterone levels and they were both on track for 6 weeks. I'm going back for another US Tuesday and we are hoping the HR will be more like 120. Cautiously/nervously excited. Good luck to you! :)

  • We probably ovulated late... Isn't it terrifying though? I'm seeing my doctor in 2 weeks just because it will give me peace of mind. I can't wait to see the little dumpling at 8 weeks and I'm praying for a strong heartbeat! Best of luck to you and praying for us both :)
  • I had my first ultrasound today. I'm pretty sure I'm 6 weeks and 3 days. I don't think I could have ovulated much earlier than that because I started taking progesterone supplements 2 days after my suspected O date. My tech showed me the yolk sac and pointed to what she "thinks" is the fetal pole. It looked like she took a reading of the heartbeat but she didn't show me or mention anything about it. They also took blood for my beta and progesterone. Should get the results of that first thing tomorrow morning and a call later in the day.

I'm kind of anxious because she seemed so uncertain about whether or not she was looking at the fetal pole. But I'm wondering if they're trying to date it based off my LMP? I keep telling them I ovulated late (I think on CD 20) but who knows if they're paying attention. So maybe she was concerned because she thought I should be 7 weeks.... ? I'm not sure, but it's definitely giving me a case of the nerves because I've miscarried before.

Anyone know if it's normal for the fetal pole to still be difficult to see around 6-6.5 weeks?

  • I don't know for sure but I've heard that a lot of the times they won't u/s until past 7 or 8 weeks because you aren't guaranteed to see anything earlier than that... Best of luck, I will be keeping you in my thoughts!! It might just be too early to tell... When is the next u/s?
  • I have similar experience but I dont get another ultrasound until Monday. I didn't see the heart beat yet because the dr only see gest sac 1st time and something like fetal pole 2nd time but no heart beat. My levels are high and increasing though. What are your hcg levels?

  • The report I received in my email says to come back in 7-10 days.... so next Thursday or Friday. Levels went from 4105 last Thursday to 13550 yesterday. They measure the baby at 5 weeks 5 days, which isn't possible because that would mean ovulated 4 days after starting progesterone supplements, which everyone has told me is not possible. Lol. The doctor should call later today. I'm less anxious after seeing the report, but I'll still be a little nervous until I hear if the doctor is concerned or not. Lol

  • Omg yay!! Do you have the u/s pic to share? :)
  • Hi! I'm also a FTM and yesterday was my 2nd scan, which was moved a few days earlier due to a spotting scare. Baby's heartbeat's at 68bpm, slow but normal for his/her age at 6w2d according to the OB-sonologist
  • I forgot to mention that baby's GA today based on my LMP is 7w4d, but accdg to my 1st scan on 15/09 GA's 5w2d, 2nd scan yesterday said 6w2d which is really confusing if you look at it. Doctor explained that it takes several scans for comparison to determine baby's exact age

I didn't realize that it takes multiple scans. That makes me feel better. Based on when I think I ovulated, I should be 6 weeks and 4 days, but my scan estimated me at only 5 weeks 6 days today. I've had losses in the past, so it made me nervous that baby seemed small. My doctor never explained why they were taking multiple scans. And they didn't tell me a GA when they called, I got that off the report they send to my email. So I'm assuming they didn't tell me because they'll wait till they can compare the two scans? This makes me feel a lot better actually. Lol. Maybe now I can relax more while I wait for my next scan.

Glad to be of help, krzyriver! it's also useful to make a list of everything you need to ask your Doctor even if some of those questions have been answered here in the forums so that you can compare notes. I'm OC like that hahaha :)

based on my scan results and how the doctor explained things to me, the 1st scan measured the mean sac diameter and that's where they based the GA. the 2nd scan wherein the baby was bigger and more visible, they measured the crown rump length and that's the new basis for the GA. succeeding scans from here onwards will measure the CRL to monitor baby's development. I bring all my scan results every time I see my Doc and it's really helpful coz sometimes the files take long to load online on her computer
  • I'm a FTM too and I went in today thinking I was 6 weeks only to find out I'm actually 5 weeks and 3 days. Even though she said everything is progressing nicely I was still bummed I couldn't see the heartbeat. I had actually gone in 2 weeks ago b/c I def ovulated super late and we thought I would be around 7-8 weeks and i was only like 3.5, ha! I did an ovulation kit for the time period I was supposed to ovulate then 6 days after and never got a positive so I assumed I just didn't ovulate that month then couldn't get a positive pregnancy result till 10 days after my missed period. She wouldn't even confirm the little blurb was a pregnancy then but at least now we can confirm there's a bean in there and fingers crossed next weeks ultrasound will show the heartbeat! I'm ready for a belly instead of pretending my night time bloating is a baby bump!
  • Lol @amandalb12 we literally have the same story!! Although I went in for a scan at 6w2d so I saw the heartbeat... HCG is good for me (32,000) but progesterone is low (10.2) so I'm getting on progesterone supplements for the rest of my 1st trimester. Wish me luck everyone :)
  • Yes its normal to not see a fetal pole that early, they didnt see mine with my DD last year, just the sack, and she was perfectly fine ☺️
