Just a Reminder...

For those of us who haven't given birth yet, we WILL make it. My doctor was concerned about my pain tolerance during labor and birth because cervix checks are so painful for me. I spent the whole afternoon feeling awful that I wouldn't be able to handle labor,
but, I will make it; I'll get through it.!We'll all make it. Even if we feel like we won't, just remember how many billions of women have done this and how many more will, and that includes us!

So, if you're feeling discouraged for any reason, just take this encouragement and remember we're awesome.

The pain for labor is totally different than any other pain, so just because checks are painful says nothing about how you will handle labor!

Everyone laughed at me when I said I was going to be going without pain meds and two painmed free births (and kidney stones) later my family still thinks I had a ridiculously low tolerance for pain.

Just use his doubts as motivation to have the birth experience that you want and what is best for you and your baby(whatever that may be), not the one that your doctor thinks you can handle best.

And there is this amazing thing that I affectionately refer to as pregnancy amnesia--once the baby is out and you have a little while to heal, you completely forget how painful it truly was!

I love everything about this LOL. I appreciate the vote of confidence and I'm glad you've been able to have med free births!
  • Love this! I had my first cervical check the other day & nearly blacked out. It was a bit discouraging for the doc & nurse to chuckle a little & say "this is nothing compared to childbirth" -__- & while I'm sure it isn't anything compared to birth, an entire hand in my still closed cervix wasn't exactly something I was prepared for. I know I'll get through it. At least next time I'm in so much pain, I'll get a baby out of it :)
  • This makes me feel better! My cervix is still too high she couldn't even reach it well enough to check (although she said at that point if these was any dilation it was just starting) and the check was just agony!! I was about to tell her I couldn't take it anymore when she stopped.

I've said before I think the only thing keeping me calmish is that I don't have a choice. She has to come out somehow!
  • Do they really stick their whole hand in? :-S
Ftm here. ..kinda freaking out about next week now lol

Everyone is different. I had one last week and not only did it NOT hurt, it wasn't even uncomfortable. Plus, if you really don't want it, just decline. It's not an indication of when labor will start anyway.
  • Mine does not put her whole hand in. But it does hurt for me. Pregnancy makes my lady bits very sensitive, swollen and angry.
Pregnancy amnesia is real! Once I heard my son's cry for the first time the traumatic 30 hours prior just melted away and all was right with the world. I'm very much looking forward to it this time around!
  • I had blocked the cervical checks from my memory with DD.  But, after a little discussion, I definitely remember it being very uncomfortable.  I feel like males are rougher than females.  It would make sense because we understand what it feels like for even a penis to be going up there when we're not, ya know, "feelin' it."  Someone jackin' their hand up there hurts.  I've had to say something to my male OB a couple times when he's hurt me just measuring my belly.  I don't think he realizes how hard he's pressing.  I also have a cervical check today.  I'm not looking forward to the discomfort but I really do want to know what's goin' on in there.

I have a male OB too and he was like "a cervix check should be a 1 on the pain scale." Haha. Shut up. you don't know! You can't possibly know lol
  • Hahahahaha!!  I love when they say stuff like that and even the female nurses in the room give this look like "Um, are you crazy?!"

  • I think everyone's sensitivity to it is different. I have a male OB and my cervix is really high (as in he really had to push in there). I can't say I enjoyed it, but I didn't find it painful. I also didn't have cramping after, but I've heard that some people do. I don't think there's much of a way of knowing how you'll feel until you get one done.
  • I don't get why everyone wets their pants every time the song "Imagine" comes on. I mean, it's a pretty song. But people act like it should be our new national anthem/religious guidebook/standard for every song ever written rolled into one and I just don't get it.

    *ducks*

  • I don't think I've ever heard this song. Who sings it?

  • Just had my 1st cervical check. Not comfortable. But I image it gets better the more dilated you are?

  • With my first they weren't too bad in the office. I mean, not fun but not really painful. Now once I was in labor, that was a whole other thing. I've blocked most of my active labor from memory but the cervical checks while having a contraction would send me crawling up the bed.... Definitely different for everyone....
