Clogged duct?

So, two nights ago I had a pain directly below my nipple that was so awful I could barely even touch it. It felt like a hard little chunk under my skin. I got worried and called the doctor and she said it could possibly be a duct filling with colostrum and to put a warm compress on it. The pain has resided a little bit, but the hard part is still there. Has anyone else experienced this?

Re: Clogged duct?

  • I experienced it when I was nursing fairly regularly. Warm compresses or a warm shower worked very well at unclogging. You could also try manual expression after the compress to try to work the colostrum out.

Thanks for you advice. Do you think it's normal to happen before the baby is even born? I haven't had any leakage or anything
  • I get this. If I manually express a little colostrum, it eases the pressure and pain. I've spoken to my midwife about it and she's not worried.
  • I think it is completely normal, if irritating. I would highly recommend taking care of it sooner than later however, as mastitis is nothing to mess with. If your breast becomes swollen, red, very painful to the touch or starts to have red lines, go to your doctor immediately. These are signs of infection and need to be dealt with promptly. Otherwise, YAY! Your pregnant!
