hey all! This is my first post and unfortunately it's to ask opinions on what to do for a cold. Obviously we can't take any medicine but I want to feel better. Help!

Re: Any safe cold remedies?

  • You can take certain meds but I use a Netipot/Saline at least twice a day and drink hot water with lemon and local honey. Hot shower and steam. Or essential oils help too :)

  • I was coughing up phlem for a few weeks when i found out. My doc said to stick with natural stuff...eventually it did go away. Iv read most meds cant be used till after 12 weeks.
  • You can actually take quite a lot of types of over the counter medicine, but talk to your doctor to see what they're ok with. Tylenol if you have a headache is considered ok, I know some doctors have okayed sudafed (although sudafed is not ok for breastfeeding so that one's off my list), and some other decongestants are considered safe. Talk to your doctor. They probably have a list of suggestions.

You can also research meds yourself by looking up the FDA pregnancy category. Cat A means that it's been well studied and found to be safe, Cat B means it's only been studied in animals but is probably fine in humans and there are no known issues, Cat C, D, and X are drugs with increasing risks and should be avoided unless you're working closely with a doctor and there's a serious medical need.

Non-medicine remedies are always a good first choice though. A saline rinse is super helpful for congestion, as is sleeping with a humidifier.

  • Call your dr. first but my OB okayed Tylenol cold and throat lozenges for my cold.
