Breastfeeding Q's!

I'm sure this could have been found with a Google search but I want advice from actual mothers with experience.

What supplies do you actually need for breastfeeding? I've always thought the basics were just your breasts lol but after talking to other women they have suggested shields and other stuff I have never heard of! What did you use often? What was unnecessary? What made your life easier? Thanks in advance!

Re: Breastfeeding Q's!

  • Shields only usually if you have flat inverted nipples. Maybe some breast pads for leakage? You really do only need your breast!

  • PP said it all.  I love my Boppy pillows.  I had one in the living room and one in the nursery.  You will need breast pads for sure.  Most women leak when they have let down while nursing.  So milk will flow out of both boobs while nursing on one side.  You can even buy milk savers that will catch the milk that lets go during nursing to save.  Sometimes a nursing cover is nice if you are new at it and don't want to flash everyone getting situated.  Once you are more comfortable, you may not need to cover.

  • Some of it depends on if you plan to pump or breastfeed exclusively. Either way you will need some pads, at least at first. My aunt and a couple of my cousins say they didn't need them. I couldn't have gotten by without them.

I used lanolin free nipple balm. I liked The Honest Company brand but there are several brands available. The Aden + Anais blankets worked well for me as a cover if I was out, I was home mostly and didn't care there. The manual pump was great but if you pump often an electric pump can be handy.

Burp cloths were another must have for me. Besides using them with burping, DS would dribble so I'd use them to soak up any leakage. I also rolled one up and tucked it under my breast for support to make things a little easier and more comfortable.
  • Definitely get a nursing pillow. Loved my boppy. Breast pads are a must unless you want to leak through your shirt! Invest in a couple nice nursing bras. I had nicer underwire ones I wore during the day and then more comfortable but less supportive cotton ones I wore at night. You will probably wear a bra at night even if you normally do not. Leaking is no fun. Get a nipple cream to try to curb the raw, chapped nipples as much as possible. Seriously use it after every single time you nurse! Even if you don't think you need it at the beginning. You will definitely regret not using it. You will be constantly thirsty, so a nice water bottle to keep near will be great. I got a great big cup with a lid and straw from the hospital that I used all the time. I always kept my nursing cover with me to cover up when out and about. I very much recommend keeping extra breast pads in the diaper bag for when the ones you are wearing are soaked through.
  • Nursing tops, pads if you leak, pump and storage bags, lots and lots of water and snacks. Most importantly, patience and drive to push through and keep with it!
  • I never did leak, wonder if I will this time

  • Thank you all! This has helped so much! :)
  • I'd highly recommend the My Brest Friend nursing pillow instead of a Boppy pillow (after trying both). I had a C-section and MBF provided a flatter surface for baby to stay propped up on while avoiding my incision. I worked extensively with a lactation consultant through our hospital for 8 weeks. It took my DS 10 weeks to "get" breastfeeding on his own.
    I liked the website KellyMom.
I used nursing pads the entire year.
I also invested in good nursing bras from a speciality store once I was sure we were committed.
    Best wishes!!!

I'm in the minority but never used nipple pads (never leaked much) and hated wearing nursing bras or nursing tank tops. I loved my boppy and for the first few weeks some kind of nipple cream (lanolin etc) was essential. DH got me these heated pack things for your breasts from target, so amazing when I was dealing with engorgement and adjusting to BFing, I'll see if I can link them. After the first few weeks I really did just need my boobs. I never really used a cover and could prop LO on a pillow if needed if you don't want a boppy. BFing makes life so easy!

This is a little different from what I used but same idea!

  • Everyone's tips already are great. I just wanted to add you could need a nipple shield also if your kiddo is tongue tied/lip tied and needs to have a revision (cut/lasered) in order to properly latch. This is a more common problem than people think. Also, I never leaked, and nursed 2.5 years, though many women do. Personally, I loved the My Brest Friend nursing pillow as well.

I also never leaked in two years. During pregnancy or bf'ing. So far no leaking but wondering if this time I'll be needing all those breast pads.

ETA if you end up needing any kind of shield they usually have them at the hospital to give you.

I disagree with the statement in bold. By all means get some to have on hand, but don't open it unless you need it. I didn't use it even once with both my girls (both of whom were breastfed for over a year), and didn't have any in the house when I got my first cracked nipple with DS (my 3rd baby) because I didn't think I'd need it. It did work great for that, but you won't necessarily need it. Rubbing a little breastmilk onto your nipples when you are done nursing usually does a good job at preventing cracked nipples. :)

  • So what is the difference between the boppy and my breast friend? I currently have the boppy pregnancy pillow and absolutely despise that thing. So uncomfortable!

  • I love earth mama angel baby nipple butter. I thought that lanolin felt like spreading a glue stick on my nipples (probably TMI, sorry! It probably would have helped my sore nipples if I had been able to stand the feel of it on my skin!)
