Infected toenail help

hi everyone I think my toenail is infected. I got a pedicure and they cut my nail really short and now it's red and swollen. Sorry to be gross but i think I see pus! Normally I wouldn't worry about this type of thing but being pregnant I don't know what to do and what's safe

Re: Infected toenail help

  • I would just go to the doctor for it. I have had a lot of ingrown toenails (what this sounds like) and had to see the doctor each time. I'm not really sure what would be safe during pregnancy besides maybe washing it thoroughly and applying something like neosporin but this is one of those things I wouldn't want to mess with.

  • The doctor can take care of it for you.
  • I had an infected cuticle on my fingernail pretty bad a month ago and I was doing salt water soaks about 3x a day and expressing the puss out. I was doing this for about a week before going to the dr and she said I was doing everything correctly and these things just take awhile to heal sometimes. The only other thing she could do is give me an antibiotic but neither of us were too thrilled with that while pregnant so I just kept up with the salt water soaks and it was gone in a few more days.

I was praying for a home solution like this! Tell me did u you use Epsom salt or just regular salt ?
  • @Cjaff70 I was just using regular table salt. I would pour a hefty amount (maybe a few tablespoons) into an empty glass and then fill it up with hot/very warm water. Stir it all together and it was usually too hot to stick my finger in right away so I'd wait till it was bearable and then soak my finger until the water was cold. This may be a little more difficult for you being that it's your toe but maybe use a shallow dish or bowl?

Anyways, of course see your doctor if it persists too long but she said this is one of the best home remedies and the only other option for quicker healing is oral antibiotics. If you notice any yellow or white puss coming out after a soak (which the salt can and will draw it out if it's there) you NEED to express it! This hurts like a b!tch but is a necessary part of the healing...my entire hand would be throbbing after doing that but if it gets backed up the dr would have had to cut in to get all that out :/
  • So I went to dr because it hurt so bad and he cut my nail and put some type of cream on it. He said it was fine for pregnant women but now I'm freaked because I didn't consult my ob. Am I being crazy ?

It's ok to be concerned and we are all a little crazy. Give your OB a call in the morning and double check with them. I'm sure it is fine, though.
