Anyone else having a really late in trimester 1st dr appointment?

I feel like I am the only one that hasn't had a doctor appointment yet on the BMB. I am estimated 7 weeks today, and still no appointment for another 2 and a half weeks. My doctor doesn't schedule them until 7-9 weeks as they like to do an U/S as well. I am nervous and anxious and just want it to be 10/12 already!! I get jealous reading the weekly appointment threads and U/S threads as it makes me feel really behind. I also feel like anything can happen leading up to then, and so nervous of getting bad news at 10 weeks :( Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?

Re: Anyone else having a really late in trimester 1st dr appointment?

  • I am only 4.6 weeks and I don't have my first appointment until 7.5 weeks. She said that they don't usually see patients for the first time until between weeks 7-8. I may not even get an u/s that day. Which I personally think is dumb. I think I'm going to pull the "we need to know if we are having twins" thing (because there's a high probability of it happening) and hope I get one. My first appointment is on 10/13, so we can check in together!

  • Mine is at just after 10 weeks so I'm in the same boat. My office only schedules first appointments between 8 and 12 weeks. I was asked when I made my appt if I wanted closer to 8 or 12. Naturally I said 8, but all they had was what I ended up with. :(
  • Don't feel bad.  I'm estimated 6 weeks according to the bump (based on my lmp), but I know I'm less than that due to having an idea of when I ovulated.  So I think I'm five weeks and some days.  But anyway my doctor has scheduled two appts, one on oct 7th which is just basically peeing into a cup, getting blood drawn and getting a packet of information from the nurse, and then on Oct 22 I get an exam by the doctor.  Still no u/s scheduled yet.  I think I will get one scheduled though for dating since I know I'm not six weeks.  By the time all that is over I'll only be a few weeks away from the end of the first trimester.  I hate how late they schedule these appts.   By the time the 22nd rolls around I will be right near the week number that I miscarried last time.  Ugh.

    I won't have mine until 11 weeks! OCT 15TH. I CAN'T WAIT!
  • I get my first appointment at 8 weeks, and that will just be a urine analysis.
I get a doppler search for heartbeat at 12 weeks.
    No ultrasound til 20 weeks.

  • I feel that way too. I am 7 weeks and my doctor would not see me until 8-10 weeks. I was lucky enough to get an appointment mid way through week 8 though. I am in the same boat with the jealous feelings on everyone's U/S pics or doc appt updates. I guess everyone's insurance and doctors are different... BUT it sure sounds like A LOT of women get to go in at 5-7 weeks! I actually had a meltdown this morning because I am getting so nervous that something is going to be wrong when I go in to finally have an U/S. I just want to see the little bean NOW, so my mind can ease up and rest a bit. The first couple weeks of pregnancy are so strange, lonely, terrifying and amazing all at once.
  • Right there with you! The wait is definitely hard. I'm scheduled at 10.5 weeks for my first exam and ultrasound (and I'm currently about 8.5 weeks). It sounds like at most practices, 8-12 weeks is the sweet spot for these initial ultrasounds and exams. Hang in there!

I was able to get an ultrasound at 6 weeks only because I had some bleeding and cramping that they wanted to check out. (Thankfully, everything was fine.) My first real appointment isn't until next week when I'm 8 weeks. It's pretty standard for many offices to not see you earlier than 8-10 weeks unless there is evidence of a potential problem. I understand that it's frustrating to wait that long though.

  • I have a dating ultrasound at 6.5 weeks but don't see my midwife until 10.5 weeks. And I'm only 4.5 now do my appointment isn't until November 3rd. Which is in forever.

  • Yes! I am over 8 weeks right now and my first appointment is still not until October 1 and my first ultrasound isn't until October 26! I feel like that is so late compared to my past pregnancies

I am also not getting an appt until 9 weeks.  For my first pregnancy, I saw a doc at 6 weeks and they couldn't see anything except a sac and fetal pole, then I went back a couple weeks later and still not much could be seen, slight flicker of a heartbeat, and finally back again to see that there was no heartbeat and I'd had a MMC.  Obviously my pregnancy wasn't progressing how it should have, but I actually stressed more going in earlier and not getting to see what I wanted and having to go back multiple times than I am now at going in at 9 weeks.  The nerves of continuing to go in and not knowing what you're going to see is more than just waiting for the later appt, IMO.

  • My doctor does first appointments and ultrasounds at 9.5 weeks. I am 8 weeks today and I found out about the pregnancy very early (6 days before missed period) so it's been a long time coming. October 5th! I could have gone earlier since my LMP puts me at 9 weeks... But I ovulated a week late and I actually just wanted to go when I knew I would actually see something.

  • I haven't had my first appt yet either. My doctor doesn't do first appt.'s until between 7-10 weeks. Mine is Monday, but I feel like I've been waiting forever! I guess that's what I get for testing at 10dpo though...

  • My midwife practice sees you for the first time between 8-10 weeks, and unless there's a reason, doesn't do an ultrasound until 20 week anatomy scan. It freaked me out the first time around, but I kind of like the approach now. I know it's hard to wait though, reassurance can ease nerves!

  • My first is set to be right before my nine week mark. Doesn't help the freaking out any.
  • My first "official" OB appointment is scheduled for 9w2d, next Thursday, and there isn't an ultrasound at that appointment. That said, my doctor had me come in at 6 weeks because of cramping/spotting and ordered an ultrasound to make sure everything was ok. Thankfully, everything looked ok, but I'm STILL spotting (apparently that's just how it's going to be this time), and despite the ultrasound it still freaks me out to no end! Last time around I didn't get an ultrasound until 13 weeks and didn't see the doctor for the first time until 8 or 9 weeks, so I definitely understand that the waiting game can be just as stressful. Hang in there, and I hope the time passes quickly.
  • I'll be 5 weeks tomorrow and I don't have my first appointment until October 21st. My doctor said between the 8 and 10 weeks mark. It's hard waiting though I know!
  • My appointment is on Oct 26th, I have to wait till 10 weeks :( Good news they will be able to do the gentic testing at the 10 week appointment, so I will be able to find out the gender soon after :)

  • I'm in the same boat, my first appointment is at 8.5 weeks with the nurse practitioner (10/14). My first appointment with my doctor will be at 11 weeks (11/5) and I don't get an ultrasound until 20 weeks. Fraternal twins run in my family as well (I am a twin), so I'm anxious to find out if we are having twins. It is going to be so hard to wait that long.

  • Mine is next Friday, October 2nd. I feel like I have been waiting forever. But I keep telling myself that it's probably better to go in a little later to make sure that there will actually be something to see. I would hate to go in early and not be able to see much. I think that would stress me out even more so I've just been trying really hard to be patient!
  • I won't have one till around 12 weeks if I'm lucky. I'm having insurance issues with our upcoming move. I can't even schedule my appointments until around 10 weeks, and I have to start by seeing my PCM and THEN getting referred to an OB.....so getting seen by 12 weeks is me being hopeful.

  • I understand! My first appointment isn't until Oct 23rd and I'll be 10 or 11 weeks. Sooooo far away! And I probably won't be having an ultrasound until 20 weeks. I'm totally jealous over all these ultrasounds popping up :)

  • You're definitely not alone! I am 6 weeks today and won't have my appointment until 10/19. It's hard to wait, but it'll be worth the wait! :)

  • I'm almost 6 weeks and my doctor won't see you until you're 10 weeks. Waiting until 10/27 for my first appointment.
  • I know how you feel. Based on LMP I am 9 weeks, but because of PCOS I know I didn't ovulate until a lot later so I am 6w2d. I'm in the UK so don't know if it's different but I still haven't had a call from midwife and no booking in appt. U/S should be at 12 weeks from LMP so they need to contact me soon!! Just such a long wait isn't it?!
  • Mine is not until 10/15. I will be a little over 10 weeks :-( Unfortunately my doctor only does initial pregnancy appointments in the morning and I have a new job in a school setting and don't want to take any time off from work....so I have to wait until MEA.

  • My first two pregnancies I was in the same boat as you but b/c I have a history of loss I see the RE weekly for u/s to measure the growth of the baby.  I like it and all looks good but most likely people that go early have a reasons why so that fact you aren't going until 8-12 means your in a low risk pregnancy group.  The waiting is so hard and I wish you the best!
  • I don't go until the 13th. It's a tough wait! Hang in there.

I had to wait for insurance to approve me and it's not effective till oct. So since I just got approved Monday I will be calling to try to set up my first appointment I feel your pain I just want to go and make sure everything is okay.. plus I want to hear my munchkins heart beat already I'm estimated at a little over 7 weeks
  • Mine isn't until 12 weeks (Oct 20) and it's killing me having to wait that long. I keep googling private clinics but they all require doctor referrals anyways. I had an early scan done at 6 weeks due to spotting but that was so early they couldn't even accurately use it for dating purposes. I considered getting a Doppler to ease my anxiety but, from what I've read, Dopplers are not that easy to use for people not used to using them. I can only imagine how panicked I'd get if I heard nothing. How is everyone else keeping zen?

I'm keeping zen by assuring myself the later the appointment the more likely I'll get an ultrasound at the first one and then it will be worth the wait... I'm hoping lol but to be honest I'm so ready to see a doctor!!! Plus I want to know if I have one or two babies growing since I have a high probability of having twins!
  • Mine's at almost 9 weeks and while the wait is rough I'm hoping it will actually make the entire pregnancy feel like it's going by faster. Just trying to keep busy until then so I don't worry! ;)

  • Yep, I'll be almost 10 weeks at my 1st appt. In a way, it is good to put off the 1st appt because if you go too early 5-6 weeks sometimes the heartbeat is too hard to detect, and you WORRY until they have you back the next week. Or worse, they can tell you there is no heartbeat, advise you to terminate, only to find a heartbeat when you get a 2nd opinion a week later (this happened to my friend! Turned out her due date was a week later than she thought. So much angst for nothing, and thank God she did not take their advice to have a d&c). So yes, all this is what I am telling myself to get through the next few weeks! :)
  • I'm not having one until I'm a little over 10 weeks. We scheduled a two week vacation months ago so I won't get back until the end of my 9th week.
  • I had an us so they could date me based on one period the last two years due to nursing but I go in on Friday for my first on/ new us appt and will be 8.4 weeks
  • My midwifery practice isn't in a hurry to see anybody either: my first appointment is at the end of the month, when I'll be 9 and a half weeks along. It's stressful, not knowing if everything is proceeding fine or not. On the other hand, if there were some problem, at this point there isn't anything they or I would be able to do about it, so I guess I don't mind so much. I don't think I'll be getting an ultrasound until 20 weeks regardless, so I am glad I'll be going in late enough that they should be able to get a doppler heartbeat, at least. Meanwhile I'm just trying to be optimistic and stop overanalyzing every twinge of symptom or lack thereof! (Ha, good luck with that.)

  • My first real appointment is at 10 weeks, 3 1/2 weeks away. I've known I was pregnant since I was 3 weeks 2 days pregnant so this has been already the longest 3 weeks of my life.
  • You're not alone, I will be 9 weeks tomorrow and still don't have an appointment for another 2 weeks! it was actually not for another 3 weeks but I'm farther along than I initially thought, so I called and moved it up a week. I'm getting so inpatient!!! And what really sucks is the town I live in doesn't do ultrasounds so I have to make another appointment after this one and go to the city and hour away... Praying everything is ok, this is my very first pregnancy and its very new and scary.

  • My appt isn't until 10/15 and I'll be 10w (11+3 LMP). I should get an u/s but I'm spazzing out a little considering I've had MMC around this time years ago.
