3rd Trimester

Baby measuring up to 42 weeks at 35 + 5!

Hi all, I'm pregnant with a boy and he's due on October the 24th - at his dating scan, the date was only 2 days off my LMP date - which meant I'd actually be on my period when he was conceived which is impossible as we didn't have sex then. In all of his other scans, he's consistently measured a few weeks over - abdomen has always measured at least 3 weeks over, and the others between 1-2 weeks over!

I had a huge jump in fundal height this week (34 to 39) so my midwife sent me for a growth, where they found is head and femur is measuring around 39 weeks and his abdomen is measuring 42! She also said the baby is about 7.8lbs...bit of a shock!!

I've got to be tested for gestational diabetes on Tuesday, and then have another scan on Friday as they might need to induce me before my due date. I don't think I do have gestational diabetes as I have no other symptoms, and nothing has ever been highlighted in my blood test results.

I'm just wondering if it's possible baby could be further along than the dating scan dates? Could he actually be on the way soon?:o

The most accurate scan is the dating scan, which is why all dating is done from that point. Babies are consistently the same size at that point in pregnancy, giving a fairly accurate due date. From that point on, growth can vary drastically.

Could the dates be off? I'm sure they could. But the important thing is you are getting the proper attention from your provider. Sounds like they are covering every avenue to make sure you & baby are ok. Good luck.

  • Did you have the gestational diabetes screening test between 24 and 28 weeks? Was it negative then?

Growth can vary drastically, but I'm glad they are making sure everything checks out. With my last pregnancy, I measured consistently 2 weeks ahead in fundal height, but my provider said they'd only be concerned if it was consistently 3 weeks ahead. Weight in an ultrasound is rough estimate, but femoral height and head/abdomen circumference are not so I'm glad they're following up.

I did end up with a big baby (9.5lbs) even with no gestational diabetes, though she was short and stout and with a huge head. My new OB plans to keep an eye on the size of this current baby and potentially induce this time around.

  • Your baby's age from the dating u/s is the weeks since your LMP started, not since conception (there are 2 free weeks when you weren't actually pregnant).  So if you were only 2 days off from your LMP, then that roughly means that you had a 30 day cycle and conceived 16 days after your LMP.

There are no noticeable symptoms of GD for most women (I've had it both pregnancies) aside from higher than normal blood sugar levels, so it is very possible that you developed it after you were tested.  The most common "symptoms" of untreated GD are a large baby, particularly with a disproportionately large stomach measurement.  It can also result in increased amniotic fluid which could have made your fundal height jump.

It's great that your doctors caught it while there is still time to modify your diet and possibly get medication to reduce the risk to baby continuing to be exposed to high blood sugar levels.
  • I have the same problem. My baby is actually due on 12/2 , which means I am 31 weeks this week. But when we had a scan the baby stomach is measuring three weeks ahead of schedule. They say it is because of my gd and the baby more insulin .
