No insurance

Hey hey!

So, the original plan was my BF and I were going to get married so I could get on his health insurance, but now it's looking like that's not going to happen. I don't have insurance, and although I could get on my family's, it's really expensive and I can't afford it right now. Does anyone know what other options there are?

Thanks!

Re: No insurance

  • There's a thread on the first page about maternity leave. Check it out as it has some suggestions for this.

  • Are you in the US? You can sign up for Obamacare, trust me.. Paying more for insurance now until you give birth is worth it. I had insurance & my insurance tried to not cover me it was about $40,000 on top of the $75,000 for 7 days in NICU for my little one. It was insane. Thankfully insurance worked out on both parts and we didn't have to pay a dime but getting those bills was terrifying!

If you're in the U.S., check out Medicaid if you qualify. My step sister had to use it for her first bc she didn't have insurance and it covered her care throughout her pregnancy and she received very good care. It would also be helpful to check if your state has any other programs for children and families that could help you.
  • What pp said. Also, you'll get more benefits by not being married.  You'll more than likely qualify for WIC too.

Does your BF policy allow for domestic partners to get on the insurance? I feel like lots of them do.  If you live together you would qualify.  I had a boyfriend on my insurance when we lived together.  Look into it.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions! I applied for Medicaid today, not sure when I will know if I'm accepted or not. I plan on getting Obamacare once it opens Nov 1st, but I'll be 12 weeks at that point. I found one clinic that offers prenatal care on a sliding scale, but I can't get in until December, grr....

Unfortunately my BF's insurance doesn't allow domestic partners to get on, which sucks. Although they would if I were his male domestic partner. So I thought about pretending to be a guy, but realized it may raise suspicion if I were going to an OB (I kid, I kid....).
