Measuring increasingly small each week

I've been measuring small each week, and the difference between where I'm "supposed" to be and where I am has been getting bigger. Like a couple weeks ago, I was only a centimeter small, today 2.5 cm. the midwife said that I am still growing and baby's been moving, and has a great heartbeat so not to worry, but if I'm ever more than 3 cm too small they want an ultrasound. I'm afraid to google it in case there're some crazy things, has anyone experienced this before?

  • My sister in law's baby simply stopped growing and she had to have a c-section to increase the baby's chances of survival. BUT, she was also only 28 weeks. At this point, your baby is only pretty much putting on fat, so it is not as urgent. Trust your doctor to know what's best for you and baby.

we have measured 1-2 weeks behind almost every week and this week we crossed the 3 mark so we're scheduled to have an ultrasound 2 days before EDD. Baby moves and has a strong heartbeat, all my numbers are perfect and we have no flags- but he measures small. My mom always measured small so i'm not terribly concerned and the doctor said it's probably absolutely nothing and we both seem healthy but they'd rather check than not.

ETA: measuring small can mean a lot of things or nothing. If baby has dropped or found space to stretch out it can change their numbers, but measuring small can also mean he's not getting enough air or nutrients so the ultrasound is to get actual accurate measurements (baby may not actually measure small afterall) to determine whether or not he'll be born predisposed to certain minor complications (difficulty breastfeeding because they're not as strong or difficulty keeping warm due to lack of fat, low blood sugar, anemia, etc- generally all considered mild and treatable). They'll also check to make sure his measurements aren't due to any issues/leaks in placenta or umbilical cord.

  • I have been measuring consistently small 2-3 cm all along.  She never even mentioned it to me until my last appt and scheduled a growth ultrasound 2 weeks out so then I worried about it for 2 weeks straight.  But the ultrasound was done and everything was fine except baby is breech.  Baby is on the small side but still within normal limits.  Since your baby is otherwise doing great, I wouldn't worry about it and if you do have an ultrasound, that may give you peace of mind.  Position can have a lot to do with measurements, especially since there was a big change from one week to the next.
