Bra band size expanding disturbingly fast! Ribs sore....

so I don't think my boobs have actually grown, but I've gone from 36 to a bra that is supposed to fit 42 WITH a bra extender. Just last week I was comfortable in my 38c. A couple days ago I had to add the bra extender to that. Yesterday the band made my ribs so sore I went unhooked most of the day hiding the fact with a hoodie. I ran out last night and got a bra (XL Hanes) that was supposed to fit up to a 42 B-C. It was very comfortable in store. Today I am wearing it and had to add the bra extender and it is still making my ribs sore. Any recommendations? I'm guessing I'll have to go for a fitting, but I hate buying bras at full price and worry that things haven't stopped growing yet as I'm not quite at 27 weeks. Anyone else's ribs expanding like crazy?!

  • I haven't had that happen too much with me this time, but my ribs did that last time. I got some stretchy nursing bras even though they don't have as much support as I'd like. I may not have noticed the expansion this time because I've already starting wearing those.

  • There is such as a bra extender?!?!?!?!
  • @charm6ndmom

So I think you haven't gotten as big in the ribs as you think you have (unless you've measured before and after). I think what's happening here is that you are going up in cup sizes, so you likely need a 36 or 38, but with a bigger cup (probably not an option in that particular bra). The thing here is both band and volume. So a 38 D, for example, would have the same cup volume as a 36 DD or a 40 C, called sister sizes. The difference is in whether or not the gore tacks (that's the part in the middle between the breasts). If it's tight to your ribcage and not pressing on breast tissue, then it (at least mostly) fits. I'm guessing that this particular bra either doesn't have a gore or yours isn't tacking, which will make it seem like you need a bigger one, when likely you just need more cup volume. Is any of this making sense?
  • I have gone up quite a bit in both band and cup size, but mostly band size! And yes I've been measured before and after. I used to be 36B and I'm up to 40C/D with the 40 becoming tight in the band only already! I've added a bra extender to my 38 bra and it's been good...so far anyways.
@Taylovesbrad it's like an extra piece to add to the back of your bra with a few rows of clasps...adds a few inches :) available at most bra stores in 2 or 3 clasp sizes for about 4 to 8$
  • Following. I've been having similar issues the entire pregnancy. I freaking want to burn all bras right now, they hurt so bad!
  • I've found that the sports bras (not for active wear) at Aerie are super comfortable. The band, I find, is very light and does not restrict me. I went up a size and am finding it very nice. Will probably need to go up another size before I'm done but it is so comfortable now! And they are padded nicely so give good support to my regularly 36C cups!
  • It does make sense @tralalablah ! I got professionally fit today, and you are right that I haven't really gone up in inches around after all...maybe to. 38 from a 36 at most she said. She did say I'm a 36D now. I bought a large nursing bra from Motherhood that is supposed to fit....I'll report back tomorrow as to whether it drives me nuts as well!

  • @Melissadmag , I had fantasies all day of taking scissors to the band....it drove me nuts!

  • Try a bra without underwire. It is like the great rib migration for me and they are so sore, I have been living in tanks that have a built in bralette - a little support and no additional pressure. :)
  • You probably need to go up cup size too. Get measured :). I was told that when you buy a maternity bra you should be able to fit your fist in it. You will get bigger when your milk comes in. I cried both pregnancies buying maternity bras. I want my beautiful c cup back. I feel like a cow already.

I wish using a fist was all that needed to fit in my bra cups.
