Blocked tear duct?

So my LO has what seems to be an eye infection.
But then I also know a blocked tear duct can also look and act just like an infection .
His eye isn't too bad at all, at first I didn't think to much of it I just thought he had eye boogers because it's was very little. Then yesterday I noticed it was a little more to be normal and was coming often after I wiped his eye.

One eye is just kinda watery and mild eye boogers. Other then that both eyes would look the same.
I noticed when he cries his eyes somewhat get a little watery so I know his tear ducts are clogged up since he doesn't show actual tears .

But anyone have any advice before I go calling the pedi ? He has his 2month visit on oct 5th so I'd like to wait it out if his eye doesn't get worse of course if it isn't going away. Or if there is nothing that I can do ?

And I am not BF.
Any advice mommas??

Re: Blocked tear duct?

  • Are you breast feeding? This happened to my DD and I put breast milk in it. Cleared up within a few hours.

DD had something similar when she was born. I don't remember what the pedi called it but it wasn't an infection. Basically the tube (not the tear duct) that goes from the sinuses to the eyes is too small. It will correct itself as they grow. I would still ask your pedi about it though.

ETA: with DD, her the area around her eye was red and she had significantly more boogers in that eye than the other. Her actual eye wasn't red or irritated.

  • My LO had one from birth to about 4.5 weeks. Our pedi said the best thing to do is just wipe it with a warm washcloth frequently. She said they don't worry about them unless they aren't cleared up by about 12 months. Unless it's red and there are other signs of infection (fever, etc) then it's totally normal.
  • My LOs eye isn't red , agitated or anything . His eye looks completely normal besides the obvious one side has eye boogers and unfortunately I am not BF .
  • I wipe his eyes with a warm washcloth and apply breastmilk. It works better than the antibiotic ointment the doctor gave me. I also massage from the corner of his eyes out in a half moon shape to unclog the duct.
  • Here's a sheet our pedi gave us about it.
  • DD has the exact same thing. When I asked the pediatrician about it she said as long as the discharge wasn't a greenish yellow it's fine. Otherwise it might be an infection.
  • Had a similar issue around 2 weeks. As pp said gently wipe with warm water but i used those round cotton makeup pads and disgarded it to not spreed any possible eye bactria. Also massage the corner.
  • My LO has a clogged duct and it did turn into an infection. Her pediatrician prescribed us drops and it cleared. Her duct still clogs from time to time. Massaging the inside of her eye was recommended to us, as well as wiping with a warm compress.
  • My LO had it when he was around 2 weeks old. Doctor prescribed eye drops and it went away within a few days. I also had an appointment in few days but they made me come in right away bc it can cause an infection which can lead to baby having a fever.
