Trying to Get Pregnant

Intro and OPK question

Hi everyone! I've been lurking for a while now, so I figured I'd go ahead and introduce myself and ask for some advice all at once. I apologize in advance for not being "in the know" with all these acronyms. My name is Karman, I'm 22 yrs old. My husband and I have been together for 5 yrs, married almost 2, and TTC for about 3 months now. Also, I am currently active duty Air Force. Getting pregnant is the biggest thing on my mind right now and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we are able to conceive without any infertility issues.
Now, on to my question. I've started using First Reponse OPK since TTC, and it has been consistent in letting me know when I'm ovulating. However, today is the 4th day in a row that I have gotten a definite positive with the OPK. Currently, my period is 15 days late but I was told by my Dr today (after 2 blood tests) that I'm "definitely not pregnant." I was wondering if anyone else has had the OPK do this and what the results were; or is this normal and I just don't know what I'm talking about haha? Thanks in advance everyone!

Re: Intro and OPK question

  • Welcome.

Please, please, pleeeeeeeeease read the newbie thread at the top of the board. It will answer SO MANY QUESTIONS for you . . . including the acronyms.

What you'll find when you read it is that OPKs do NOT tell you when you're ovulating. They measure surges in LH (luteinizing hormone) which usually happen around ovulation, but can also happen at other times in your cycle. The only way to actually determine ovulation has happened is temping and charting. I'm also confused on why you're taking OPKs when your period is late? What day of your cycle are you on (cycle day 1 being the first day of your last period). If your Dr says you're not pregnant, you're not pregnant.

Also, since you've put lots of identifying information about yourself in your post - it might be wise to choose a username that doesn't give people an easy way to find personal info about you on the internet. We now know your first and last name and occupation. There are bad people out there, even in this corner of the internet.

  • Thanks, I'll definitely take time to read that thread.
Basically, I continued taking the OPK because I'm not pregnant and I wanted to see if I could still ovulate even though I missed my period (read somewhere that you could). I'm on day 49 of my cycle right now. I do keep track of my cycles, so I took the OPK around the time I would have ovulated if I had had a period. I don't temp though, so I'll have to start doing that.
As bad as it sounds I'm one of those "it will never happen to me" people. I'm just naive in that aspect of life. Thanks for the heads up though I'll look into changing that.
    Thanks for the info!
