best food to eat before an ultrasound

So tomorrow morning I have my 20 wk ultrasound.  When I did the ultrasound to check for down syndrome, my LO decided she wanted to sleep and not cooperate.  I know I can't control too much of what she's doing, but is there certain foods and timing that work best before an ultrasound so that they are a little more active?

  • Sugar. Although I thought for the AS they wanted them a bit more still? Not sure on that but I avoided sugar for the most part before my scan and my tech still complained that she was wiggling a bit much.

  • When I was trying to get 3D pictures with my third baby I was told to drink orange juice by the tech.
  • That's a concern too.  It's just last time all she did was give the tech her back and the tech kept bouncing on my stomach to get the baby to turn over.  My LO just kicked her legs, telling us all to leaver her alone, then went back to sleeping.  My skin was raw afterwards from all the rubbing the tech did ( I don't think she had enough jelly on that area) and I'm just trying to avoid that from happening again.

yikes.... my belly was a bit sore after a nurse last week while taking the heart rate pushed SO HARD. I mean I know I'm fat but she didn't need to push like that. Maybe we need to speak up because they might not realize they are hurting us?

I feel like they should know if they are being "too rough" but maybe they don't? sorry for the side note but your comment made me think about that possibility,

I didn't realize that I was raw until I went to clean off the extra jelly and I saw blood- just a little.  I said something to the student that was still in the room, but the tech had left already.  I plan on saying something before they start tomorrow also.

  • OJ is a good option. Our baby was SUPER active during the A/S (moved the entire time, and actually flipped from breech to head down over the course of it) and the tech still got all of the shots she needed. I think it's easier when they're too busy rather than not busy enough.

  • Yikes! I would definitely ask them to add extra jelly if you get the same tech. I also don't get pressing hard... they change the settings to see at different depths within your body.
When my tech was trying to get baby to move she had me get up and jump around a little, or poke the baby myself.
  • OJ and apple juice is what I have heard. However it might get LO too excited. My LO wasn't cooperating because she was wiggling like crazy. Lol

  • Everyone told me to drink orange juice before my a/s and so I did. My LO was moving around like crazy! Made him very active in there!
  • Last pregnancy I had eaten some candy a couple hours before my A/S and during my scan DS was smack in the middle of a sugar crash. He was not waking up for anything. Tech bounced, jiggled, pushed my stomach forever to try and get him to turn to get the facial views she needed. DS was not having it. I won't make that mistake again. My stomach was very sore for a day or two from that.

  • Ditto on the OJ, thats what my ob suggested last pg

  • You can also bring an ice water or very cold beverage with you.  The cold should stimulate the baby pretty quickly, so if the tech does wind up having trouble, you can fall back on that.

  • Wish I would've known this last week. Baby wasn't budging from my pelvic bone in order for the tech to measure his head!
