Darkness

Help! DS is 1 week old and won't sleep at night. He sleeps great during the day. He'll put himself to sleep with no fuss. Then at night, he wakes up the second I put him down. I was thinking it's day/night reversal but he IS tired. He just can't seem to fall asleep. Any ideas?

Re: Darkness

  • my baby has nights where she will only sleep on me. leaving a soft light on seems to help a little, otherwise I just hold her. my mom suggested laying with my arm stretched way out to make it harder to turn over, less likely to roll on her.

  • (oh I assume you're already tried swaddling -- it isn't a perfect solution for me, but the swaddle sacks with the Velcro work some nights. she breaks right out of a receiving blanket swaddle.)
  • We went through the day/night reversal. LO was a champion napper during the day, generally having one 4-5 hour nap each day but then was waking at least once an hour at night, though often every 30-45 minutes. We tried keeping a soft light on at night, but that didn't seem to matter to her. We also tried swaddling, but she actually seemed calmer if she had her arms free - she will suck on her hands if she wants to comfort suck but isn't actually hungry. Finally, at day 13, she slept last night in ~2 hour chunks. It doesn't seem like much, but for us it was a huge achievement!  We've spent the last couple days trying to keep the place as bright as possible during the day and keeping light/stimulation to a minimum at night to help reverse the reversal. Here's to hoping we've made it over the hump and last night wasn't just a fluke!
  • Try a noise machine or box fan. It may be too quiet at night for him. He's never been in quiet. Think about it. He's listened to your heartbeat and stomach noises for 9 months. Just an idea
