Confession: I poke my baby awake...

when I read or see something that makes me sad I will poke him all over until he wakes up so I can feel him move. Today I was reading a story about a woman who had an abortion at 21 weeks because she found out at the anatomy scan that her baby basically had no brain. So I poked my belly to wake up my sleeping son and make him move around so I could feel him. Am I the only one who does this?!?

Re: Confession: I poke my baby awake...

  • You are definitely not the only one who does this! I'm constantly poking my little man to wake him up when I read something that worries me! I'm extra stressed because both my mom and grandmother had still borns at 38 weeks so I'm constantly pulling out my doppler and poking him to make sure he's still okay in there
  • Loading the player...
  • I sort of did this too once....I was sitting at my desk a couple weeks ago and realized I hadn't felt him move since I had got to work, so I sat there at my desk moving my belly around gently.  All of a sudden i got a punch to the ribs.  I told DH this and he laughed at me how I'll be that mom who wakes up her baby just to make sure hes ok.  My OB said that it's normal to not feel them when you're busy, but when you do wake them up they have a startle reflex...so that made me feel bad and haven't done it since.
  • Every time I do it I just get a smaller movement from him. He moves his hands around or shifts positions and goes back to sleep. It's more for my reassurance. But he's only been actually startled a few times.
  • I do it haha! I think he understands now because he usually kicks after a few prods then I stop!
  • I've done it bc I feel bad my DH and mom never are around when he's awake and moving. I only did it once for my mom, though, bc she yelled at me for poking her grandbaby lol. But she was only in town visiting for the weekend and my LO was being super uncooperative.
  • I did this in front of my DH and he was appalled! I tried explaining the US techs use the probe in the same way to get LO to move all the time and that they even put a loud vibrating buzzer on my belly for a few seconds during NST's but he was still like "don't do that to her!!!!"
Now I just gently nudge her in private if it's been awhile since I've felt her.
  • I haven't poked but I will rub or massage firmly. My midwife saI'd that at 30 weeks you only feel 25 percent of babies movement so that was a relief.
  • I also read a Facebook share today that shattered my heart for the family but also scared me bad. So I jiggled my tummy a tiny bit and he moved. But then he got the hiccups after I stood up and I was just so I love. I love that feeling.
  • I think my baby is poke-resistant! No amount of poking or moving gets an immediate response from him.
I haven't been too concerned because he's a relatively active baby, and drinking ice cold water seems to generally get him moving around. And yes, I'll chug cold water sometimes just to feel him wiggle!
  • Absolutely not ... simply because he already DOES NOT STOP MOVING so any time he's sleeping is a lovely break for me (so I can also get some sleep!).
  • I have only done it once, and it was so my MIL could feel baby girl moving. She was so stubborn and wouldn't do anything all day I was with my MIL, so finally I poked her. I would have felt bad about it, except it made my MIL so happy.
  • LO doesn't usually respond when I poke at him, but the other morning. I was laying on my side with both hands cupped around my belly. He was moving around alot so I jiggled the whole space and he froze. Then, erupted into a whirlwind of movements. I did it again and the same thing. That was the only time where I have felt like he was reacting to my movements.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I drink orange juice or put on loud music and he wakes up but then I feel guilty lol
  • Not only do I poke him awake, but in my OCD brain I've convinced myself that I can get him on a schedule before he's born. So, I try to wake him at 3, 6, 9 and 12. Haha
  • My baby doesn't stop moving. Ever. At least it feels that way. While in walking, working, sitting still it doesn't matter to him. Every day is party day. Lol
  • Mine is always wiggling around he is nonstop
  • Absolutely not ... simply because he already DOES NOT STOP MOVING so any time he's sleeping is a lovely break for me (so I can also get some sleep!).

I second this! My little one is becoming a karate master in there. I love when she kicks but it's so nice to have a little break when she's asleep. :)
  • I do it in the morning with my little girl cause I like to lay in bed and sing/talk to her before my day gets really crazy.
  • I poke mine back. (Nicely of course!) He kicks me, so I poke back... it's only fair right! Hahahaha!

I actually asked my doctor is poking him would do anything harmful, and she said not at all. He's so protected in there. Even when we feel a limb and poke it, there is so much tissue, goo and fluids around him cusioning any touch!
  • My husband pokes him back!!! At night he will lay his head on my belly and pokes my son when he gets jabbed. It's apparently their little game!
  • I rub my belly all the time... High risk twins that don't usually move around enough for me to feel unless I'm sitting still. It's just reassuring to know they are still doing well.
  • My little one is quiet, I think. She moves a lot during the day but she sleeps a lot too. And often she'll move, grow quiet and move again. She's a good baby.

So yeah, being paranoid, I poke her now and then. :)
