Crocheting a baby blanket--Yarn suggestions?

Hello, I'd like to start crocheting a baby blanket and I'd love suggestions on which yarn to use from anyone who has a good recommendation. I'm afraid of picking out a yarn that will irritate a baby's skin, but would like it to hold up nicely in the wash.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and what type of specialty yarn shops you have access to, or if you are willing to buy online rather than at a Joanns/Michaels. Generally, brands like babysoft are good. I also found some washing techniques on pinterest that are supposed to make any yarn, even red heart, super soft. If you are willing to spend a lot more money, you may want to consider buying baby alpaca yarn, but it will add up fast. Good luck!

I agree with @chitownparent. I personally love baby blankets made out of Red Heart because they're soft and VERY easy to wash- the two most important things in a baby blanket! And the bonus is that it's really inexpensive.

100% go touch all the yarns. I personally use almost exclusively bernat baby yarn for all my blanket projects. My oldest niece is now three and hers is still ridiculously soft- I love it, and the yarn holds up to use well.

They also have a 'blanket' yarn which is SUPER thick, but makes the absolute best baby blankets for the cold months. You'll see it if you look at all- it's the thickets yarn I've seen other than arm knitting yarn. But again it stays really soft and holds up really well.

Patron's beehive baby yarn feels like clouds when in a project- much better for crocheting than knitting so I don't really know how easy it is to work up but it feels lovely.

The only other brand I have had luck with is the lion heart homestead line specifically.

Bernat wool is terrible- the lion heart thick and quick wool and spin offs are great.

The simply soft yarn usually stays soft but can be a tad annoying to work with.

I only knit, but I love Cascade 220 superwash wool for special Midwest cold weather blankets. It's soft, knits up beautifully, and washes easily. Plus, they have tons of colors, so you can order online if you can't find what you want locally.

bernat baby yarn, or lion heart homestead. I've made "lovies" with both that are still beautiful years later.

Definitely go on a yarn touching spree.

Hobby Lobby has some nice alpaca yarn by Yarn Bee that is super soft. Everytime I go, I stock up on it.

Like PP, I also like Caron Simply Soft and Lion Heart Homestead.

I also like some of the bernat baby found at HL/Michaels.

Definitely choose a yarn meant for baby- the composition will be safe (usually has a combination of wool and acrylic- wool is soft and elastic, acrylic is also soft though less elastic and helps reduce allergens from wool). If you are going for a blanket, choose a worsted weight yarn. If you fall in love with a thinner yarn, you might want to double up to make sure you buy enough for that. Sometimes it's fun to get two different colors of the thinner stuff (I think it's called a sport weight) and make a two-toned look. Good luck! I love knitting

I don't crochet too much but I will say someone made my daughter a blanket and it was pretty loose and fluffy, which I thought would be great, up until the day my daughter woke up with a piece of the yarn wrapped around her finger and cutting off circulation! Poor thing

Most yarn places have a baby yarn section, at least the colors make it obvious. Check that out and you will
see all of those yarns are great for baby.
