Treating sciatica with chiropractor

This is my first pregnancy, and about a week ago I hurt my back and have been basically bed ridden. My dr suggested seeing a chiropractor because she believes it is sciatica and there is not much you can do besides take muscle relaxers. Has anyone experienced this? I know it's safe considering my dr is the one who suggested it, I just dont like the idea of being "aligned" with a baby inside of me..

Re: Treating sciatica with chiropractor

  • Chiropractic care during pregnancy really should be a mandatory thing. You will be amazed and it can really help you.

  • I go to the chiropractor every week. I don't think I'd be able to walk if I didn't go. I have prior back problems, but adding in pregnancy has made them 10x worse. Seeing a chiropractor is a lifesaver.

Btw, just tell him/her you're pregnant and they won't go so hard on you. My chiropractor is very gentle and still gets the job done. He's very conscience of my growing little one.
  • I don't think there's anything wrong with seeing a chiropractor..I found them immensely helpful after a bad car accident.

Physical therapy has been working wonders on me, so you can maybe bring that up with your doctor if you're still uncomfortable with chiro..I went the PT route because I knew chiro would be a lot more money than a referral for PT..maybe that's just my area though, doctors usually refer for PT before chiro in my experience.

  • I have had sciatica problems for years. A good chiropractor is key. I have visited mine a few times while being pregnant and I always feel amazing after. Definitely let the chiro know you are pregnant but it is safe. I have heard proper alignment can help with an easier delivery, too.

If you are new to chiropractors, there are different methods they use. For years I went to one that did the "crack your back and send you on your way" style. I am not a fan. I never liked going. My chiropractor now uses a tens machine (amazing), does a muscle massage and the alignment. It is so relaxing. She also works on some stretches with me and teaches me ones to practice at home. I much prefer this style. There are others as well, I believe. You may want to do a little research or ask around before decided which one to go to.
  • My chiropractor has been the only thing to help with my sciatica. However, if I didn't have so many visits covered on my health insurance, I probably would do something else.

  • Chiropractic care is my #1 care. I don't think it's a cute all for illnesses, and I certainly am not an "essential oils over meds" person, but I do believe our chiropractor has helped my son and I immensely. Being correctly aligned is SO important.

Depending on the procedure they use, they'll alter it for your pregnancy. Look one up that specializes in women and children, and you should be golden.

Fwiw I will be taking this baby in ASAP after birth. I took DS at 4 months for acid reflux and he was off his meds within a month of going.

  • I saw a Chiro for my sciatica but it really wasn't helping too much so I finally started seeing a good physical therapist. So far I've had one visit plus one week of doing her recommended exercises and I am feeling better already.

  • Going to a chiro SAVED me during my pregnancy with DD. I was in complete misery before I started going. I would be numb and have radiating pain down my right arm and leg. It also helped other things like my breathing and digestion. If you can swing it, definitely go. I would totally still go if it weren't for the cost. Hopefully, I will feel good this pregnancy but if not I will be going back.

  • I've been seeing someone for remedial massage. He specialises in pregnancy. Does the trick for me while still being very gentle.
  • My bff goes to a chiro who specializes in pregnant women. If you cant get a specialist, you definitely want to let the chiro know ahead of time that you have a little one growing, for the safety of you and baby.
I need to go to one soon.. My back is sore from adjusting to the baby weight. Probably the reason why I have trouble sleeping. :(

Just be sure to have him/her be gentle and take their time with you or consider going to one who knows the ART technique. https://www.activerelease.com I went to one who specialized in that and really liked it compared to the bone cracking.

I had a bad experience with a chiropractor being too rough in 2012 and have pain to this day. I think the relaxin in our bodies from being pregnant can make us more vulnerable to injuries but don't quote me.

ETA: sorry to be a worry wort but just be very particular about who you see. I'm wishing you the best & hope you feel better soon!

  • I maybe a little bias because I myself am a chiropractor; but since this is my first pregnancy and after treating many pregnant ladies prior I knew what to expect when it came to aches and pains and boy am I glad that I began getting regular adjustments from day one because I have not had any issues with the added weight and odd postural changes. I get adjusted about every other week. If you look on the ICPA (international chiropractic pediatric association) website you can find certified Chiros! There are chiropractors who are certified in certain techniques such as Webster for those who have breached babies. It also is important to consider getting your LO checked after the labor delivery process!
  • I'm pretty biased in this area my brothe his dad and all his cousins on that side of the family are Chiropractors also I work for two Chiropractors. I have to say it is one of the best things you can do for yourself and the baby. Also in the long run it will help with labor and delivery if you continue throughout your pregnancy. Another thing I suggest is that you look round your area for one that has experience with pregnant patients. also if you don't feel comfortable with the office or even the dr during the initial consultation and you feel you aren't getting a care plan designed for you then walk away and find someone who is will to give you the attention and time and care you deserve.
