How to approach doc about PPD

LO will be three weeks tomorrow....and I'm still an emotional wreck. I've come to terms that it is probably more than hormones, and I have no idea how to battle PPD. I feel like I'm losing my grip on everything...and I know I need to talk to my doc about it. My fear is the doc is going to think I'm just after pills or something. I have no idea how to bring the subject up to my doctor at all. Any suggestions?

  • Spill your guts to your doctor. It's too important not to. Just tell him you have anxieties. I got PP OCD 1 year later after DD1 and told her what was going on and how I was feeling. She told me about her experience PP. I was put on Zoloft and felt so much better. I'm taking it again this time around too.

  • I wouldn't think a good doctor would assume you were just after pills.....I am sure they have had many patients go through this and will understand. It's good you are going to talk to them, try not to worry what they will think. You are doing the best for yourself and your little one. They should be nothing but supportive. Prayers for you! My little one will be 4 weeks in a couple days and I am still quite emotional and a little out of sorts. I know it's temporary and will pass. But it's still hard. Not saying what you have is just the blues, you know yourself best, but letting you know you aren't alone.
  • I just called and made an appointment. My midwife was great about it.
If this is the Dr you saw throughout the pregnancy, they probably know you well enough to know that you're not after pills.

I was just about to make a thread about this..do I go back to my midwives who saw me the entire pregnancy or to my primary care doctor about ppd? I'm 4 weeks pp and the blues aren't going away.. My anxiety is horrible and I'm crying all the time still. My worry is that since I'm going to be not returning to work..I'm about to soon lose health insurance. :/
  • If you don't want meds, what about seeing a psychologist or therapist instead of going to your OBGYN? There are people who specialize in treating PPD without them. You can search for people who specialize in "pregnancy, prenatal, & postpartum" on the psychology today therapist finder.
  • I was going to ask which doctor do I call? My OB or my family doc?
  • If you're less than 6 weeks out, usually your OB is the one you call.
