Any one else dealing with a nb with slow weight gain? My DD is 9 days old and is struggling to gain. I saw an LC yesterday and we've come up with a plan. I'm making an appt with my pediatrician for Friday for her to be weighed and to get advice. I've noticed that she is hard to wake up to breastfeed but we bf every 2-3 hours. She seems like a sleepy/lazy eater when at the breast and actually does better if I pump and feed her a bottle. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.
I don't know what her weights are but my little guy took the full 2 weeks to get back to his birthweight. He grew really slow for the first 2 weeks then he took off once he got back to birth weight he gained an ounce per day. We go back Friday to see how much he has gained since then.
What is your goal for feeding her? If you want to keep breastfeeding, put her on the breast first, then offer the bottle. Bottles are easier to get milk out of than the breast, unless it's truly slow flow.
My DD1 had this same problem--not a latch problem or tongue tie, or anything, just inefficient. I went to solely bottle feeding pumped milk and was miserable, so when she was 2 months we worked HARD to get her back to the breast, which took 6 more weeks or so.
I wish now that I had kept trying at the breast before offering the bottle and that I had given her more time. I also have found with DD2 that changing her diaper between sides and changing positions helps her stay alert enough to go longer when she's sleepy.
It's totally up to you and your desires, but I would advise you to hang in there!!
@meggipi5 right now I pump about 10-20 ml, breastfeed her, then give her what I initially pumped. And if I struggle getting her to wake up then I pump the breast she didn't take and give her a bottle. Sometimes I'm able to do both breasts and sometimes only 1.
My goal is 1- to get her weight up And 2- I want to exclusively breastfeed but she's not making it easy. She's not tongue tied and the LC said her latch was good. I think she's just hard to wake and is a lazy sucker.
My LO has had tons of trouble gaining weight. Just had a weight check yiday and she's the same as she was last week, 12 oz under her birth weight. I am having to supplement after each feeding to see if we can get her back up. She was 2 weeks yesterday. She is very hard to wake to feed, especially at night. Her pediatrician said it does take longer for breastfed babies to gain back and that her own daughter didn't reach birth weight until 3 weeks.
As far as keeping her actively feeding, it's tough. I change positions, undress her, change diaper, wet wash cloth, etc. Some babies are just hard to wake up I guess.
I'm going through the same thing. My little guy is 2 and a half weeks old and finally regained his birth weight. He has been in the 1st percentile for growth and has had us very worried. When he breast feeds, he falls asleep right away and I can't wake him up no matter what I do. The doctor told me I need to supplement with formula until he starts gaining. I'm not happy about that and want to only breast feed, but I'm doing it for his health. I'm hoping that he'll get stronger at breast feeding and become more awake/alert as he gets older. Hopefully I can stop supplementing with formula soon. I don't really have advice, but wanted to say that I completely understand your frustration! Good luck to you!
