I just downed the orange drink so I can fail the glucose screening, and while it isn't that bad, it is basically KoolAid, so can't they make it taste any better than that?! Or have flavors beyond orange and green? Yuck!
is it thick like a syrup or is it thin like a normal drink? I remember having to drink the early 90s version of this for a test as a kid and it was SO gross and I remember it being incredibly syrup-y
I took mine this morning. I had the lemon lime and it tasted like super sweet, flat soda. Now I'm nursing a headache from the sugar. But it's okay because it's all for my bub!
I'm going to fail because I failed it with my first pregnancy. If I don't fail, I will be pleasantly surprised.
It is a thin like KoolAid.
I realize they aren't 7-11, but it is a problem with a lot of medical tests that you have to drink things for. And this one is a sugar test. I've read online that if you can't down the drink you can have pancakes with syrup and get the same effect, so there is no reason for it to taste like that. It's like someone worked to find a way to make sugar water taste nasty. Honestly you could probably have a Slushie and get the same results.
I've heard some will let you drink anything as long as it's the right amount of sugar which is typically 50 grams. Might be worth asking if you can't stomach the standard one. I had the lemon lime at 10 weeks for an early screening and despite some lightheadedness was fine. I'm expecting the same this time around. Just make sure it's cold, that helps a lot.
I was told that if I couldn't drink it all or keep in down they would make me come back and do the test all over again. Willpower is a powerful thing ladies! I failed the test and got diagnosed with gestational diabetes, currently diet controlled and it's not too bad once you get used to needing to plan out every meal.
Hey there. I also failed 2 out of 3 tests, and got diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I have to go to a diet control class next week and they show you how to test your levels on yourself. I am quite scared to be honest with you. How bad is the planning of meals? I'm afraid there will be nothing I will find to eat . When is your due date? Mine is December 31st, will be our first. It's been pretty smooth sailing until this part.
I passed my three hour test.. But my doctor still says I show signs of gestational diabetes. She didn't give me anything, she just wants me to go in a diabetic diet.....
I took the 1 hour test for the second time last week at 24 weeks. Had to take it at 12 weeks because of my BMI being higher. (Passed both times so luckily no 3 hour test for me.) But it tasted like super sweet orange gatorade to me. I had a headache after the first time but last week I almost passed out during the 1 hour waiting period. Sweating, seeing spots, felt dizzy. Ended up having to go into work late because I felt so horrible. There has to be a betterrible way to test
@halfpint1979, I'm still able to eat most things as I didn't have much of a sweet tooth, it's all about spreading your carb intake over the whole day. I've been on the diet for 5 weeks now and have found that planning my meals for the week on the weekend makes it much easier, no thinking about what you can eat when you get home from work.
Testing your sugars is nasty at first but gets easier after the first couple of goes. I have worked out that some spots on my fingers don't even hurt when I prick them.
It might take a week or so on the diet before you see numbers even out as you get used to what carbs your body can tolerate at different times of the day but you will be fine once you get used to measuring portions. I've managed to eat at a wedding, restaurants and several bbqs since my diagnosis without high readings.
Also, if the doctor says you need insulin don't panic, I started injecting at night time this week and it hurts less than pricking your finger.
Forgot to add, I'm due January 11 but being induced at 38 weeks due to baby's size (measuring big) and my being on insulin. We're looking at December 29 at this stage.
I did mine yesterday. I felt fine at first, then slowly became more and more nauseous. By the end of the hour I felt sure I'd throw up but ate and felt better. Aside from that I was sleepy and grumpy the rest of the day but I also hadn't had enough sleep. They said I'll find out results in a week or less. I hate waiting...
The taste is not "that bad" and I think no matter what it tasted like some one would hate it... They can't please everyone. It would be expensive to keep different flavours in stock to appease fussy people.
@arac2007 I went to the class yesterday and it was not bad at all. Checking sugar is something I need to get used to. And meal plan is not that bad. I need to go on tue for follow up. They will see the readings and then decide about insulin.
I took the 1 hour glucola test back at 13 weeks at my OBs office.
Now I see a midwife and she gave me a glucometer and had me take a fasting sample, then I had to made a drink of hot water or tea with 5 tbs of honey and test again 1 and 2 hours later. I passed, but I felt MUCH worse after the honey drink. It was harder to drink than the glucola and I had a raging headache and had to fight the urge to throw up all morning. It was rough.
I have to have mine in 2 weeks time...not looking forward to it at all as I'm not great at the best of times with fasting and not eating a substantial meal...I get hangry....
Do yourselves a big favor and use a straw! You taste it a lot less and can get it down faster, also ice cold if you can! I did it once at 10 weeks and have it again on Monday.
Mine was this morning. It was clear but tasted like orange. It was super cold and I was so thirsty so it didn't bother me much. I forgot my straw, though! Last time I failed the one hour by one point Thinking it may be likely the 3-hr is in my future again. Boo.
Bring water to sip after too! I found it totally disgusting but I didn't want to have to fast again so I made sure not to throw it up. I had the lemon lime flavor.

I was told to drink the drink- it was stuck in my throat, so I asked if I could have water- she told me no, they told me no food, no drink during the test ... I guess every dr office is different
With my last pregnancy, I failed the one hour and passed the three hour. I had an awful reaction each time. I have a pretty sensitive system. I found myself dizzy and nauseous a few days after each even when lying on my left side. What helped was drinking a ton of water with lemon afterward to flush my system and salty foods. I have never had so much chicken broth in my life.

I have mine tomorrow and I have similar instructions. I can have no more than sips before the test and nothing during. Best part is after the test is completed, I have an hour to drink water, get a snack and have an ultrasound. I don't think I will have any issues drinking the water at all!
Taking mine tomorrow...mine is the 3 hour test right off the bat. Doctor said to eat a salad the night before. Anybody else get instructions like that? Worried about not feeling well either. I have been sick twice this week which I haven't been since week 16 and I'm 28 weeks tomorrow....perfect timing.
I had my one hour on Friday. I was dreading it because I've heard so many bad things about feeling sick and whatnot. But it was an okay experience for me. I misunderstood my doctor when she told me I could "have a snack" (I guess she meant after the test while I was waiting to see her) and had a couple strips of turkey bacon an hour before my appointment but I was still starving by the time I got there. I wasn't given a choice in flavors. I got orange and as others said it just tastes like orange Fanta or Crush. I thought it tasted good but not something I'd purposely buy. I saw some light spots for a while but otherwise I felt fine after drinking it. The worst part was I wasn't allowed to drink during the hour wait and my throat was dry and a little sore because I was getting a cold. That part sucked. Otherwise it wasn't bad like I was dreading. But now i'm dreading it I failed and have to do the three hour. Going that long without eating is definitely going to suck.
I'm sitting in the labcorp having just drank the drink. It wasn't as horrible as I had been expecting. It was orange, cool, flat, and oddly a little spicy. My doctor was very clear that I was not to fast before this one. I had some scrambled eggs. So far I feel ok. Hopefully I'm tolerating it!
How bad is the lemon lime flavor? Is it really lime-y? I can do sprite, but HATE lime flavor and scent. (Sensory memory of my wilder, college days, and a bad episode with lime/tequila shots. Once it comes up, it ain't going back down.)
I have my test on Thursday, and would prefer something that tastes like flat sprite to orange kool-aid.
I always get fruit punch. It's not something I enjoy but I don't think it's that bad. My test is in two weeks and my appointment is at 10 so I'll have eggs for breakfast and then drink the drink and that's that. I'm glad I have it in my fridge and can drink it before my appointment- the last two pregnancies I had to go to a seperatw lab place and hang out for an hour

Ugh. I couldn't do it if it were fruit punch. Is anyone else old enough to remember those fluoride treatments they used to give at the dentist office? The ones that were a gel the put in styrofoam tooth trays, and they stuck them in your mouth with the sucky thing for what seemed like a lifetime? They were always fruit punch. I haven't been able to drink fruit punch since I was about 12.
Ha! I don't remember that- the only thing that sticks out in my mind is the molds the orthodontist used to take. I don't think they had a flavor, but they snuck down your throat something awful- I threw up once and had to start all over again. Blech!
